DHL Group and Neste deepen partnership to drive decarbonization in logistics

In a move to accelerate efforts toward reducing emissions in the logistics sector, DHL Group and Neste have announced a strengthened collaboration. The partnership will focus on leveraging Neste’s renewable fuel solutions, including renewable diesel (HVO100) and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), to help DHL achieve its ambitious decarbonization goals in both air and road transport.

DHL Group has set a long-term target of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. As part of its interim 2030 goals, the company plans to electrify 66% of its last-mile delivery fleet and increase the use of sustainable fuels across all transportation modes to over 30%, including the adoption of SAF. Neste, a global leader in renewable diesel and SAF production, will play a pivotal role in supporting DHL Group’s transition to greener logistics.

Under the agreement, the two companies will develop a commercial framework to facilitate DHL Group’s annual procurement of approximately 300,000 tons of unblended SAF from Neste by 2030. This partnership will also explore opportunities for additional SAF volumes to be purchased and sold. Furthermore, DHL Group and Neste will collaborate on integrating renewable diesel into DHL’s road transportation operations, further advancing its decarbonization efforts.

Yin Zou, Executive Vice President of Corporate Development at DHL Group, emphasized the significance of the partnership: “This agreement with Neste marks a crucial milestone in our journey toward net-zero emissions by 2050. By partnering with a leading renewable fuel producer, we are better positioned to meet our interim sustainability targets. Together, we aim to create innovative solutions that not only align with our own goals but also support our customers in achieving their sustainability objectives.”

Carl Nyberg, Senior Vice President of Commercial Renewable Products at Neste, echoed this sentiment: “We are excited to expand our collaboration with DHL Group through a comprehensive approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in transportation. This partnership allows us to support DHL, a pioneer in its industry, with our renewable fuel solutions, which offer a viable pathway to cutting emissions in both road and air transport.”

The collaboration builds on a longstanding relationship between the two companies, including successful initiatives in sustainable aviation fuel deliveries. Additionally, Neste and DHL Group have worked together to support the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) in developing and testing the ISCC Credit Transfer System. This system enables airlines, logistics providers, and corporate customers to accurately report emission reductions achieved through the use of SAF, helping them lower their carbon footprint in air travel and freight transport.

By combining their expertise, DHL Group and Neste aim to set new benchmarks for sustainability in the logistics industry, driving meaningful progress toward a greener future.
