Fusion Fuel Green starts construction of biomass-powered steam project in South Africa

Fusion Fuel Green PLC, a provider of clean energy engineering and utility solutions, has announced that Biosteam Energy (Proprietary) Limited, its majority-owned joint venture, has started construction and equipment fabrication for its first biomass-powered industrial steam facility in South Africa. The project is being developed at a major dairy processing plant, marking Fusion Fuel’s first operational presence in the Southern African region, according to the press release.

As per the news report, Biosteam Energy was established in partnership with Alien Fuel (Proprietary) Limited, following the companies’ joint venture announcement on October 16. The initiative represents a key step in Fusion Fuel’s broader industrial decarbonization strategy and expansion into emerging clean energy markets.

Construction and Equipment Fabrication Underway
Groundbreaking began earlier this week, with fabrication of the biomass boiler and fuel systems already in progress. These systems are being produced by Alien Energy (Proprietary) Limited, an affiliate of Alien Fuel.

The full facility is scheduled for commissioning and commercial operation in January 2026, with initial revenue expected soon after. Once operational, the project will supply steam using a carbon-neutral biomass system, replacing an existing fossil-fuel-based setup.

Emissions Reduction and Carbon Credit Benefits
The new system aims to significantly reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions while generating verified carbon credits through both landfill waste diversion and the transition to renewable fuel sources.

Fusion Fuel expects the project to serve as a model for sustainable industrial energy solutions, particularly in sectors that are difficult to decarbonize.

Strategic Milestone for Fusion Fuel
Fusion Fuel CEO John-Paul Backwell described the project as a major step forward in the company’s mission to provide low-carbon energy alternatives.

“We’re excited to see the project move from paper to reality,” Backwell said. “This marks the beginning of our South African operations and provides a tangible example of how Fusion Fuel can deploy sustainable energy solutions to deliver measurable emissions reductions in hard-to-abate industrial sectors.”
