Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov held a meeting with LanzaJet CEO Jimmy Samartzis and Vice President of Commercial Stephane Thion to explore industrial and technological cooperation in the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Kazakhstan. The discussion centered on localizing advanced clean-energy technologies to support the country’s climate and energy transition goals.
Plans for SAF Production Plant in Kostanai Region
According to the Prime Minister’s press service, both parties discussed the construction of a SAF production facility in Rudny, a town in the Kostanai Region. The proposed plant would have an annual capacity of 54,000 tons of aviation fuel and be capable of processing up to 100,000 tons of bioethanol from various feedstocks, including grains, corn, and potatoes.
A feasibility study for the project has already been completed, marking a significant step toward the development of Kazakhstan’s green industrial sector.
Promoting Low-Carbon Innovation and Climate Goals
LanzaJet is recognized for its advanced ethanol-to-jet technology, producing aviation fuel with a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to conventional alternatives. The initiative is expected to strengthen Kazakhstan’s green aviation sector, boost agricultural processing, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with the country’s national sustainability agenda.
The company also proposed establishing an integrated structure to implement the joint venture effectively, ensuring streamlined collaboration and technology transfer.
Global Backing for LanzaJet’s Clean Energy Mission
Founded by the U.S.-based bioengineering firm LanzaTech in Chicago, LanzaJet is supported by a group of major international investors, including Shell, Microsoft, Airbus, British Airways, ANA, Mitsui, International Airlines Group, Suncor Energy, Breakthrough Energy, and Groupe ADP. The company maintains long-term fuel supply agreements with several of the world’s leading airlines, reinforcing its position as a global leader in sustainable aviation fuel production.
Strategic Step Toward Kazakhstan’s Energy Transition
The collaboration between Kazakhstan and LanzaJet reflects the country’s growing commitment to clean technology and energy diversification. If implemented, the project in Rudny could become a regional hub for sustainable aviation fuel, contributing to economic growth, job creation, and environmental sustainability in line with Kazakhstan’s long-term green development strategy.
