The Spanish Biogas Association (AEBIG) and AINIA have forged a partnership aimed at boosting the production of biogas and biomethane in Spain. This collaboration seeks to advance research and innovation in the sector, supporting sustainability in industries such as agri-food, chemicals, and the environment.
The agreement was formalized by AINIA President Manuel GarcÃa Portillo and AEBIG President Luis Puchades, both expressing a strong commitment to promoting biogas and biomethane as reliable, renewable energy sources.
Key focuses of this partnership include the effective utilization of organic waste through anaerobic digestion, as well as the treatment and agronomic reuse of digestate. The collaboration will also work on enhancing the characterization of substrates for biogas production and innovating pretreatment technologies.
Further exploring the potential of biogas, the partnership will investigate its conversion into high-value chemicals via the Gas2Chemicals process.
AINIA has been at the forefront of Spain’s biogas sector for over 20 years, contributing to numerous renewable energy initiatives. Their experience includes optimizing production techniques and developing solutions that improve efficiency.
Among their recent efforts is the UPBIOMET+ project, which aims to improve anaerobic digestion technology to boost biomethane production by converting COâ‚‚ into more methane. This initiative seeks to enhance energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Another project, COMBOI, is focused on transforming COâ‚‚ and methane into valuable bio-based products using biotechnology and catalysis.
Founded in 2009, AEBIG is a non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for biogas as a sustainable energy source. It represents a broad spectrum of stakeholders in the biogas industry and plays an active role in both national and international forums, including as a founding member of the European Biogas Association (EBA).
