Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer held their first meeting since Starmer’s election during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Apia, Samoa.
During their discussion, both leaders emphasized the economic opportunities associated with the transition to net zero, highlighting the potential for new industries, technologies, and jobs.
They agreed to establish a new collaboration focused on climate change and energy, named the Australia-UK Climate and Energy Partnership. This initiative aims to advance the development and deployment of renewable energy technologies, including green hydrogen and offshore wind, to help both nations achieve their decarbonization objectives.
Prime Minister Starmer stated, “The UK and Australia share many common goals, including our commitment to enhancing the lives of working people, driving economic growth, and ensuring cleaner, more affordable energy.”
He added, “This partnership highlights our dedication to powering the UK with clean energy projects that will benefit communities throughout the country.”
