Jordan plans to produce up to 0.6 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030

At the Energy Charter Treaty Conference in Brussels on Wednesday, Secretary-General Amani Azzam, representing Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh, opened the ministerial meeting on the event’s second day, reported Zawya.

Addressing delegates from 30 member states and observers, Azzam underscored the pressing need to foster a sustainable energy future, as highlighted in a statement from the Ministry of Energy. She emphasized the critical role of the modernized Energy Charter Treaty in safeguarding investments and providing essential guarantees for clean energy technology investors.

Azzam called on participants to leverage the treaty to establish a stable, predictable investment climate that supports green growth. She also showcased Jordan’s significant progress in renewable energy, noting that the share of solar and wind energy in the country’s power mix had increased from under 1% in 2014 to nearly 27% by 2024, with expectations to exceed 30% by 2030.

The country’s renewable energy growth has been bolstered by technological advancements, including a hydroelectric storage project designed to improve the management of renewable energy sources.

Azzam also outlined Jordan’s green hydrogen strategy, with plans to produce up to 0.6 million tonnes annually by 2030 and scale that to 3.4 million tonnes by 2050. Additionally, she highlighted efforts to improve electric transport infrastructure and expand regional power interconnections, aimed at building a more sustainable and efficient energy system.

The Secretary-General stressed the significance of international and regional collaboration in tackling climate change, referencing the outcomes of COP29, which called for an accelerated shift toward sustainable energy systems.

The second day of the conference also featured the release of the 2024 Energy Investment Risk Assessment Report, an Energy Charter Awards ceremony, and a session of the Energy Charter Industry Advisory Committee. Key discussions centered around minimizing investment risks in clean energy technologies, protecting investments under the updated treaty, and resolving energy transition disputes within its framework.
