Larsen & Toubro secures land in Gujarat’s Kandla for green hydrogen and ammonia production projects

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) announced on Tuesday that it has acquired land in Kandla, Gujarat, to develop projects focused on green hydrogen and green ammonia production. This move aligns with the Indian government’s strong push towards green hydrogen as a sustainable energy source, supported by initiatives such as the National Green Hydrogen Mission and various pilot programs aimed at integrating green hydrogen into transportation.

During a shareholder meeting, L&T’s Chairman and Managing Director, S N Subrahmanyan, highlighted the company’s progress in emerging clean energy sectors, particularly green hydrogen and small modular reactors (SMRs).

The company is already manufacturing electrolysers, positioning itself as a pioneer in the green hydrogen space. Subrahmanyan also noted a significant milestone with the US Department of Energy granting regulatory approval for the transfer of SMR technology to India. L&T is among only three Indian companies eligible for this technology transfer, marking the official beginning of its journey in commercializing nuclear energy domestically.

While initially collaborating with global partners on green hydrogen and SMRs, L&T aims to eventually develop proprietary technologies, manufacture essential equipment, and provide innovative, cost-effective solutions tailored to emerging markets.

The land secured in Kandla will be used for manufacturing green hydrogen and green ammonia units. Additionally, L&T has the capability to execute engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects related to green hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol on a global scale. Previously, the company had incorporated L&T Green Energy Kandla Pvt Ltd to spearhead its green hydrogen initiatives.

Green hydrogen, produced by electrolyzing water using renewable energy, is gaining recognition as a clean fuel alternative with the potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions.

Looking Ahead: Pioneering Sustainable Energy Solutions
L&T’s strategic investments in green hydrogen and SMR technologies underscore its commitment to supporting India’s transition to a low-carbon economy. By leveraging advanced technologies and expanding manufacturing capabilities, the company is well-positioned to contribute to the global clean energy landscape. As demand for sustainable fuels grows, L&T’s initiatives could play a crucial role in shaping the future of energy in emerging markets and beyond.
