In a significant move towards decarbonising Vietnam’s aviation sector, Petrolimex (PLX) and its subsidiary, Petrolimex Aviation, have officially introduced sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to the domestic market. This makes Petrolimex the first enterprise in Vietnam to import synthetic blending components (SBC) derived from bio-based or renewable sources and to master SAF blending technology that meets stringent international standards.
The announcement comes as global aviation intensifies efforts to reduce emissions and meet net-zero targets by 2050. SAF, which is produced from renewable feedstocks, can cut lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional jet fuel, and is widely regarded as a critical solution for decarbonising air travel.
At the launch event held in Hanoi, Petrolimex Aviation signed offtake agreements with Vietjet and the U.S.-based Associated Energy Group, LLC (AEG Fuels). These deals not only kickstart commercial use of SAF in Vietnam but also pave the way for wider international cooperation.
Petrolimex’s SAF meets international certifications including EI 1533, ASTM D7566, and DEF STAN 91-091, as well as Vietnam’s own TCVN 14414:2025 standard. The fuel has already been uplifted for use on commercial domestic flights. The SAF blending system at Nha Be Petroleum Terminal, where the fuel is produced, has been recognised as a flagship initiative to mark Petrolimex’s 70th anniversary.
Pham Van Thanh, Chairman of Petrolimex, emphasised the company’s proactive investment and innovation in SAF technologies, noting that this move demonstrates its commitment to sustainable development and cooperation with the government and aviation stakeholders in achieving a green transition.
The launch was also welcomed by Director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, Uong Viet Dung, who highlighted the strategic importance of SAF beyond its commercial value. He noted that establishing a certified, local SAF supply chain would bolster collaboration across the aviation ecosystem and reinforce Vietnam’s environmental goals.
Petrolimex Aviation’s SAF production and supply system has been certified under ISCC EU and ISCC CORSIA — globally recognised benchmarks for sustainability and emissions reduction.
Nguyen Van Hoc, General Director of Petrolimex Aviation, said these certifications affirm the company’s operational competence and readiness to collaborate with both domestic and international partners in promoting a greener aviation sector.
Under its agreement with Vietjet, 1,200 cubic metres of SAF — blended entirely in Vietnam — will be used to fuel the airline’s fleet. Each delivery will include a Proof of Sustainability document in line with ISCC EU criteria.
To Viet Thang, Vietjet’s Standing Deputy General Director, said the partnership aligns with the carrier’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, pioneering clean fuel adoption, and supporting Vietnam’s green growth strategy.
In a further step towards expanding its global footprint, Petrolimex Aviation has teamed up with AEG Fuels to bring Vietnam-produced SAF to international markets, reinforcing the country’s role in supporting the global aviation industry’s green transition.
