Indonesia’s state-owned energy company, PT Pertamina, has taken a significant step toward supporting the government’s clean energy agenda by transitioning its shipping fleet to B40 biodiesel fuel. This move underscores the company’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and advancing the nation’s energy transition goals.
Muhammad Irfan Zainul Fikri, Fleet Director of PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), revealed that since January 2025, all 189 vessels operated by PIS have been powered by B40 fuel. PIS, established as the primary shipping subsidiary under PT Pertamina in 2021, plays a critical role in national energy distribution. The shift to B40 biodiesel aligns with the company’s broader strategy to promote sustainability and reduce its environmental impact.
Fikri emphasized that this initiative is a key part of PT Pertamina’s efforts to support the government’s clean energy program while ensuring energy security. “By adopting B40 fuel across our entire fleet, we are actively contributing to the green energy agenda and reinforcing our commitment to a sustainable future,” he stated.
B40 biodiesel, a blend containing 40% biofuel derived from vegetable sources, has proven to be a more efficient and eco-friendly alternative for the shipping and transportation sectors. Its use significantly lowers carbon emissions compared to conventional fuels, making it a vital component in the global push for greener energy solutions.
This transition is also a cornerstone of PIS’s long-term vision to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The company aims to position itself as a leader in the green shipping industry, setting an example for sustainable practices within the maritime sector.
“We envision PIS as a pioneer in driving the transformation toward a more sustainable and environmentally friendly shipping industry,” Fikri added. “This shift to B40 fuel is just the beginning of our journey to meet our net-zero targets and support Indonesia’s broader energy transition goals.”
The adoption of B40 biodiesel reflects PT Pertamina’s proactive approach to integrating renewable energy solutions into its operations. By prioritizing cleaner fuels and sustainable practices, the company is not only reducing its carbon footprint but also paving the way for a greener future in Indonesia’s energy and transportation sectors.
