Rybnik municipal utility secures funding for biogas plant project

Green Energy Center (CZE), the municipal utility based in Rybnik, southern Poland, has secured a substantial financial package to develop a new biogas plant. The total funding of PLN 74 million (approximately USD 26 million or EUR 23 million) includes a combination of a PLN 35 million grant and a low-interest loan exceeding PLN 38 million, reported Renewables Now.

This financing comes from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management as part of the Modernisation Fund. It is allocated under a programme aimed at fostering the development of cogeneration using municipal biogas.

Project Overview: Biogas Plant in Rybnik
The new biogas facility will process around 20,000 tonnes of biodegradable waste annually, such as food scraps and green waste. These materials will undergo anaerobic fermentation to produce biogas, which will then be used to generate both electricity and heat.

The heat produced will meet the energy needs of the plant itself, while any surplus electricity will be supplied to the local power grid.

Environmental and Regional Benefits
The biogas project aligns with broader environmental goals, particularly in improving waste management and advancing renewable energy sources in the region. In addition to reducing waste, the facility will bolster energy security for Rybnik and surrounding areas.

The National Fund emphasized that the project supports the development of sustainable, green energy solutions and contributes to enhancing the local community’s energy independence.
