Sonnedix expands Italian footprint with 80 MW solar acquisition from Blunova SpA

Sonnedix, a prominent renewable energy producer with over 3 GW of operational capacity worldwide, has acquired an 80 MW solar PV plant in Sicily from Blunova SpA, a subsidiary of the Carlo Maresca Group focused on renewable energy development. This acquisition marks a key milestone in a broader partnership, where Sonnedix plans to purchase ten operational plants totaling 250 MW across Southern Italy.

Once fully operational, this 250 MW portfolio is projected to generate over 145,000 MWh in its first year, enough to supply approximately 55,000 Italian households and prevent more than 50,000 tons of CO2 emissions.

The acquisition of the 80 MW facility follows Sonnedix’s earlier purchase of three plants from Blunova SpA, with agreements for six more expected to be finalized in the first half of 2025. This expansion will elevate Sonnedix’s operational capacity in Italy to nearly 800 MW.

All ten projects are contracted under Italy’s Gestore dei Servizi Energetici (GSE) FER 1 auction round, which guarantees a stable electricity price for Sonnedix’s customers over a 20-year period.

Sonnedix CEO Axel Thiemann remarked, “This announcement represents a significant step in our growth strategy for Italy. With these acquisitions, we are on track to double our operating capacity in the country. Our extensive knowledge of the Italian market and our proven track record make us the ideal steward for these assets, aligning with our commitment to deliver clean, affordable, and reliable energy to Italian consumers.”

Giuseppe Maronna, Sonnedix’s Head of Growth for Italy, added, “Acquiring these ten plants, which are part of the Italian government’s renewable energy auction round, is crucial for our growth strategy in Italy. It ensures our customers benefit from fixed, long-term prices for renewable energy. We look forward to strengthening our partnership with the Carlo Maresca Group to further accelerate Italy’s energy transition.”

Blunova SpA, represented by General Manager Dario Barbetta and Development General Manager Emanuele Mainardi, noted, “Our successful collaboration with Sonnedix began two years ago. In 2024, we completed a significant set of operations, thanks to the dedicated teamwork of our commercial, technical, and legal staff.”

“Blunova continues to expand in the renewable sector with a 4 GW development pipeline, including projects in photovoltaics, agrivoltaics, onshore and offshore wind, as well as storage technologies,” they added.
