South Australia’s Hydrogen Jobs Plan for a green hydrogen hub near Whyalla, featuring a 250 MW electrolyser, has received clearance under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). Whyalla green hydrogen is likely to boost the production, reported Renewables Now.
The EPBC approval, which follows a development permit granted in July, comes with specific conditions. These include adherence to designated project boundaries and limiting habitat clearing to no more than 89.4 hectares of Western Grasswren (Gawler Ranges) habitat, the media report further added.
The South Australian government plans to establish a hub that will not only include the 250 MW electrolyser but also a 200 MW hydrogen-fueled power station and a 100-tonne renewable hydrogen storage facility.
In October 2023, the state announced the potential winners of the tender, which includes a consortium of international gas and engineering companies. With GFG Alliance identified as a likely offtaker, the hydrogen site is anticipated to begin commercial operations in early 2026.
