Spain increases its target for green hydrogen production capacity

Spain has ramped up its green hydrogen production goals as part of an ambitious overhaul of its energy and climate strategy, according to a document released by the Energy Ministry on Monday.

The revised plan sets a target of 12 gigawatts (GW) for electrolysers by 2030, up from the previous draft’s target of 11 GW. This technology will be pivotal in producing green hydrogen.

The cabinet is expected to formally approve this updated national energy and climate plan in a meeting on Tuesday. This plan is crucial for guiding corporate investments, as it outlines targets for energy efficiency and renewable energy initiatives.

Spain aims to emerge as a frontrunner in Europe’s green hydrogen sector, leveraging its abundant solar and wind resources to generate clean energy. However, like many of its European counterparts, Madrid failed to meet the June deadline for submitting its plan to Brussels.
