TotalEnergies and Air Liquide partner to develop Green Hydrogen projects in Netherlands

As part of its 2030 goal to decarbonize hydrogen used in its European refineries, TotalEnergies has entered into agreements with Air Liquide to develop two projects in the Netherlands. These initiatives will produce and deliver around 45,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, generated primarily by renewable power from the OranjeWind offshore wind farm, a joint project between TotalEnergies (50%) and RWE (50%). The green hydrogen will help reduce CO2 emissions from TotalEnergies’ refineries in Belgium and the Netherlands by up to 450,000 tons annually and support European renewable energy goals in the transport sector, according to the press release.

The two companies have formed a 50/50 joint venture to construct and operate a 250 MW electrolyzer near the Zeeland refinery, aimed at producing up to 30,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. This electrolyzer is set to be operational by 2029 and is expected to reduce CO2 emissions at Zeeland by up to 300,000 tons per year. The project will require a total investment of around €600 million and will apply for support through European and national subsidy programs.

Additionally, TotalEnergies has signed a tolling agreement with Air Liquide as part of the latter’s 200 MW ELYgator electrolyzer project at Maasvlakte, Netherlands. The agreement will allocate 130 MW of capacity to produce 15,000 tons of green hydrogen annually for TotalEnergies’ Antwerp platform. The hydrogen produced will be powered by renewable electricity from the OranjeWind project. Expected to be operational by the end of 2027, this initiative will help reduce CO2 emissions at the Antwerp refinery by up to 150,000 tons per year.

Vincent Stoquart, President of Refining & Chemicals at TotalEnergies, commented, “Our partnership with Air Liquide marks a significant step in TotalEnergies’ ambition to decarbonize the hydrogen used in our European refineries by 2030. Through supplying these electrolyzers with renewable electricity from our offshore wind project, TotalEnergies is reinforcing its position as an integrated electricity company.”

Emilie Mouren-Renouard, a member of Air Liquide’s Executive Committee, added, “Projects like these are vital in reducing emissions, particularly in hard-to-abate sectors like industry and heavy mobility. We are proud to lead Europe’s efforts in renewable and low-carbon hydrogen production and support TotalEnergies in their decarbonization efforts. These projects are part of our broader strategy to deliver practical solutions to our customers while advancing Europe’s goals for decarbonized growth.”

TotalEnergies remains focused on reducing the carbon footprint of its energy production and supply operations. One key strategy for achieving this is using low-carbon hydrogen to decarbonize its European refineries, which is expected to cut around three million tons of CO2 emissions annually by 2030. TotalEnergies has already secured contracts for more than 170,000 tons of green hydrogen annually for its refineries in France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
