Vital Energi acquires Port Clarence biomass facility in Teesside

Vital Energi, a specialist in energy infrastructure development, has expanded its portfolio with the purchase of the Port Clarence biomass plant located in Teesside, England, according to the press release.

The deal comes shortly after the company completed a major £175 million Nordic Bond raise — one of the largest Sterling-based Nordic Bond issuances ever secured in the UK’s energy infrastructure arena. The successful fundraising round reflects strong global investor confidence in Vital Energi’s capabilities, performance history, and long-term strategy. The Port Clarence site was acquired from Nuveen Infrastructure / Glenmont Infrastructure.

As per the press release, the purchase marks a significant milestone in Vital Energi’s transition from a provider of energy solutions to a substantial owner of energy-generating assets. Drawing on the expertise gained through the commissioning and ongoing optimisation of the Drakelow energy-from-waste (EfW) facility, the company plans further investment to maximise efficiency and operational returns at Port Clarence.

Currently, the Drakelow facility processes up to 169,000 tonnes of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) every year, producing around 18 MWe of electricity. Port Clarence, once fully operational, is expected to exceed 30 MWe, highlighting the scale of Vital Energi’s widening ambitions.

Energy produced from both plants will be supplied to the national grid, strengthening the UK’s renewable energy output and supporting national decarbonisation efforts.

Vital Energi stated that the acquisition reinforces its commitment to reviving stalled or underperforming assets and turning them into high-efficiency energy-from-waste facilities, solidifying the company’s role as a key contributor to the UK’s sustainable energy future.
