Lead

Reliance CBG investment in Andhra Pradesh will total ₹1 lakh crore, executive director Anant M Ambani announced on 2 October, with the planned compressed biogas plants expected to create more than 3 lakh jobs and generate nearly ₹60,000 crore in revenue for the state over the coming decades.

Context

The announcement was made at the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the Rayalaseema Horticulture Hub and the Indian School of Agriculture in Madanapalle. Ambani said Reliance’s green-energy businesses could create a closer connection between farmers and India’s energy transition.

The proposed CBG projects would make compressed biogas a major part of Reliance’s planned activity in Andhra Pradesh. The company has linked the investment to agriculture, which Ambani described as a potential source of both food and energy value.

The investment comes alongside Reliance’s plans to support agricultural training through the Indian School of Agriculture. Jio is expected to work with the institution to deliver training modules to farmers in Indian languages through village-based virtual classrooms.

Ambani Speaks

Speaking at the Madanapalle event, Anant Ambani said Reliance saw an opportunity to connect farmers with the country’s changing energy system.

“Through Reliance’s green energy businesses, I see an opportunity to help our Anna Daatas become Urja Daatas,” Ambani said.

On the CBG investment, Ambani said:

“That is why Reliance Industries is grateful to the Government of Andhra Pradesh for the opportunity to invest ₹1 lakh crore in the state to set up compressed biogas (CBG) plants.”

Ambani also outlined a broader objective around agriculture and energy, saying:

“My mission is to help make our farmers more prosperous, our energy cleaner, and our care for animals stronger.”

Reliance’s agricultural technology plans include the use of artificial intelligence, drones, robotics, cloud computing and price information through its Jio Krishi platform. Ambani said the company’s technology initiatives could help rural youth become digitally enabled extension workers.

The Bioenergy Business Analysis

The ₹1 lakh crore CBG investment puts compressed biogas at the centre of Reliance’s announced expansion plans in Andhra Pradesh and directly connects the proposed projects with the state’s agricultural economy. The projected creation of more than 3 lakh jobs and nearly ₹60,000 crore in state revenue gives the announcement significance beyond plant construction, although the source does not provide project timelines, individual plant capacities or commissioning schedules.

For the bioenergy sector, the announcement signals an effort to connect agricultural activity with CBG production while expanding the role of rural communities in the energy transition. The absence of detailed project-level capacity and execution timelines means the investment’s eventual impact will depend on how the announced CBG programme is developed.
