Uniper reappoints Michael Lewis as CEO for a further five-year term

Uniper’s Supervisory Board has reappointed Michael Lewis as CEO until 31 October 2031, extending his current term as the company pursues its energy investment and transition strategy.

Uniper’s Supervisory Board has reappointed Michael Lewis as chief executive officer for a further five-year term, extending his leadership of the German energy company until 31 October 2031.

The new appointment takes effect on 1 November 2026, replacing Lewis’s existing term, which was scheduled to end in May 2028. The early extension is intended to provide continuity as Uniper pursues its strategic priorities, including investment, growth and the transformation of Europe’s energy system.

Tom Blades, chairman of Uniper’s Supervisory Board, said Lewis had led the company through a period of significant challenges since 2023, taking it from stabilisation towards a stronger financial and strategic position.

Blades said Uniper now had a stronger balance sheet, a clearer strategic direction and greater flexibility to focus on growth and investment. He also expressed the board’s confidence in Lewis and the executive leadership team to continue implementing the company’s strategy.

Uniper signals continuity in energy transition strategy

Uniper said it remains focused on investing in secure and sustainable energy, supporting business growth and creating long-term value for shareholders, customers and society.

The leadership extension comes as European energy companies navigate the parallel demands of energy security, affordability, infrastructure investment and decarbonisation. Decisions on capital allocation and project development will be important in determining how companies balance reliable energy supply with the transition towards lower-carbon systems.

Lewis’s extended tenure provides continuity at the executive level, although the company’s future progress will depend on the delivery of its stated strategic and investment priorities.

Bioenergy Business Analysis

Uniper’s decision to extend Michael Lewis’s appointment well ahead of the end of his current term signals the Supervisory Board’s preference for leadership continuity during the company’s next strategic phase.

For the European energy sector, the significance lies less in the appointment itself than in the decisions that follow. Investment priorities, portfolio changes, infrastructure development and progress towards sustainability objectives will determine how Uniper contributes to the region’s evolving energy system.

The board’s assessment of a stronger balance sheet and improved strategic flexibility provides the rationale for its decision, but these remain attributed statements rather than a substitute for reviewing the company’s financial disclosures and project-level performance.

For industry observers, the key indicators to watch include Uniper’s subsequent capital expenditure plans, the progress of its energy-transition investments and the balance it strikes between energy security and decarbonisation. Lewis’s new term runs through October 2031, giving the company a defined period of leadership continuity against which its strategic execution can be assessed.
