Trade Expo Indonesia 2026 strengthens export and energy security through BPDP partnership

Indonesia's TEI 2026 brought BPDP and five plantation industry associations together to promote palm oil, biodiesel and other plantation-based products, strengthen international trade relationships and support downstream industry development.

Indonesia’s 41st Trade Expo Indonesia (TEI 2026) brought the country’s plantation industry, biofuel producers and international trade partners together through a partnership with the Plantation Fund Management Agency (BPDP), as the government seeks to expand export markets, strengthen downstream processing and support domestic energy security.

Held from October 14–18, 2026, at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) BSD City in Tangerang, the trade exhibition provided a platform for Indonesian businesses to promote plantation-based products and explore international commercial partnerships. BPDP participated as an event partner, working with five industry associations representing palm oil, biofuels, oleochemicals, coconut processing and cocoa.

BPDP Collaborates With Five Plantation Industry Associations

BPDP’s participation centred on promoting Indonesia’s plantation commodities and connecting domestic industry stakeholders with international buyers.

Through a joint promotional presence, the organisations highlighted opportunities across the plantation value chain, from upstream production and processing to higher-value downstream products.

According to BPDP, the initiative was intended to improve the international visibility of Indonesian plantation commodities and strengthen cooperation between government institutions and industry participants.

Aida Fitria, Head of BPDP’s Cooperation and Institutional Division, said the agency’s participation was aimed at introducing its programmes and support for plantation-sector development while creating opportunities for broader cooperation among industry stakeholders.

Trade Agreement With Chinese Businesses Opens Market Opportunities

One of the significant commercial developments during TEI 2026 was the signing of memorandums of understanding between Chinese business representatives and three Indonesian industry associations.

The participating associations were GAPKI, HIPKI and ASKINDO. Indonesia’s Minister of Trade witnessed the signing, which was intended to facilitate trade cooperation between Indonesian businesses and their Chinese counterparts.

The agreements offered an opportunity to develop commercial relationships involving palm oil, coconut-based products and cocoa. However, the reported announcement did not specify the financial value, volumes or delivery schedules associated with the agreements.

Palm Oil and Biodiesel Connect Trade With Energy Security

Palm oil occupies an important position in Indonesia’s industrial and energy strategies. Beyond its established applications in food and oleochemicals, the commodity is a major feedstock for the country’s biodiesel programme.

Indonesia has used palm-based biodiesel to diversify its domestic fuel supply and reduce exposure to imported diesel. The sector also creates a link between agricultural production, domestic fuel manufacturing and the country’s broader energy-transition objectives.

BPDP supports the development of the plantation sector through programmes covering smallholder replanting, biodiesel, research and development, education and training, and the empowerment of smallholders and related businesses.

Its collaboration with APROBI at TEI 2026 also brought the biofuel industry into a broader international trade and business-development platform.

The exhibition therefore provided an opportunity to promote plantation-derived products across several markets, including renewable fuels and industrial applications. However, BPDP’s participation should be distinguished from a specific biodiesel supply agreement or a newly announced biofuel investment.

TEI 2026 Records Strong International Participation

The 41st edition of Trade Expo Indonesia was organised around the theme The Ultimate Hub for Global Sourcing. At its opening, the Ministry of Trade reported 1,873 participating exhibitors and registered buyers from 134 countries, with a target of US$17.5 billion in potential transactions.

The exhibition subsequently exceeded its initial transaction target. According to the Ministry of Trade’s October 18 closing announcement, TEI 2026 recorded potential transactions worth US$22.94 billion, representing 31.1% above the original target.

India, the Netherlands, Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates and Japan were the five markets with the highest potential transaction values.

These figures cover the overall exhibition and should not be interpreted as transactions attributable specifically to BPDP or the biofuel industry.

BPDP also received third place in TEI 2026’s Best Booth competition, recognising its promotional presence at the exhibition.

Bioenergy Business Analysis

The BPDP–TEI 2026 partnership illustrates how Indonesia is connecting agricultural commodity development with export promotion and domestic energy objectives.

Palm-based biodiesel remains an important component of Indonesia’s strategy to reduce dependence on imported conventional fuels. At the same time, the competitiveness of the industry will depend on feedstock economics, processing capacity, regulatory continuity, sustainability requirements and the ability to access international markets.

The trade agreements involving Chinese businesses could also create opportunities for Indonesian plantation-based products. Nevertheless, their eventual commercial significance will depend on whether the memorandums progress into binding contracts, actual shipments and sustained trade relationships.

TEI 2026 provides a platform for that engagement, while BPDP’s funding and development programmes support the underlying plantation ecosystem. Converting these complementary roles into sustained commercial outcomes will be important to Indonesia’s ambitions for a more competitive, value-added plantation industry and a stronger domestic bioenergy sector.
