Atlas Renewable Energy, a leading provider of global renewable energy solutions, and Grupo CAP, through its subsidiaries Compañía Minera del Pacífico (CMP) and Aguas CAP, have signed a significant 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) to deliver 450 GWh per year of clean energy to Chile’s mining and steel sectors. This agreement is one of the largest renewable energy and storage contracts in Chile’s energy landscape, according to the press release.
The commercial partnership includes the development of a solar power project and a battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Atacama region. The BESS technology will ensure the continuous supply of electricity, even during non-sunny periods such as nighttime, providing 100% clean energy around the clock while reducing CO2 emissions.
This PPA is a key milestone in Chile’s push for decarbonization, supporting CMP and Aguas CAP in reducing the carbon footprint of their mining and steel production processes. By utilizing renewable energy, the companies will minimize their environmental impact, contributing to Chile’s goal of achieving a carbon-neutral energy grid by 2050.
The use of BESS technology is crucial for ensuring a stable and reliable energy supply, addressing the intermittency challenges often faced by renewable energy sources. By incorporating solar energy with battery storage, Atlas Renewable Energy is helping Chile move toward a more sustainable and resilient electrical grid.
In line with the growing trend of combining solar photovoltaic systems with BESS, Atlas Renewable Energy is advancing multiple projects to support its PPAs signed in 2023 and 2024. These projects will provide 475 MW of solar power and 616 MW of energy storage capacity.
Alfredo Solar, Regional Manager for Chile and the Southern Cone at Atlas Renewable Energy, highlighted the company’s continued role as a strategic partner for major industries, including Copec and CODELCO. “With this latest landmark PPA, we are increasing our installed capacity in Chile by more than 1,000 MW through solar and BESS projects,” he stated.
Francisco Carvajal, CEO of CMP, emphasized the importance of the agreement in advancing the mining industry’s transition to sustainability. “This milestone reaffirms our leadership in the mining sector’s shift toward renewable energy. It not only guarantees reliable electricity but also strengthens our commitment to operational efficiency and sustainable development in the regions where we operate,” Carvajal said.
Grupo CAP’s ongoing commitment to sustainable practices is reflected in their strategic focus on decarbonization and the use of cutting-edge technologies. “This agreement allows us to continue advancing our sustainable energy strategy while contributing to the development of the Atacama region and Chile,” said Carvajal.
As Chile continues its energy transition, Atlas Renewable Energy is reaffirming its role as a 100% clean energy provider, supporting key industries such as mining in their decarbonization efforts. The signing of PPAs for renewable energy and BESS solutions is a crucial step in driving the country’s low-carbon future.
