Bangchak and CPF sign agreement to produce SAF from used cooking oil

On October 28, 2024, Bangchak Corporation Public Company Limited and Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CPF) signed a cooperation agreement aimed at producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel/SAF from used cooking oil. The agreement was formalized by Mr. Chaiwat Kovavisarach, Bangchak’s Group Chief Executive Officer and President, and Mr. Prasit Boondoungprasert, CPF’s Chief Executive Officer, with additional signatories including Mrs. Gloyta Nathalang and Ms. Kobboon Srichai. The signing ceremony took place at CP Tower on Silom Road, attended by executives from both companies and BSGF Company Limited, a Bangchak affiliate.

Under this agreement, Bangchak and CPF will work together to collect used cooking oil and other fats from CPF’s food production facilities, including by-products from wastewater treatment plants, to produce SAF through BSGF.

Mr. Chaiwat Kovavisarach expressed gratitude to CPF, highlighting the collaboration as part of the “Fry to Fly” initiative aimed at generating SAF as a future energy source. He emphasized that this partnership supports the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) economic model and reinforces ESG principles vital for sustainable practices, ultimately driving positive environmental and societal impacts.

The collaboration aims to enhance the circular economy by repurposing food production waste, promoting health and environmental sustainability. Used cooking oil from CPF’s restaurant brands, such as Chester’s and Five Star, will be sourced under initiatives like “No Repeat Frying” and “No Fry Left Behind,” which have been active since 2022 and involve over 800 locations nationwide. This initiative transforms waste oil into SAF, potentially reducing CO2 emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional jet fuel, thereby contributing significantly to climate change mitigation.

Mr. Prasit Boondoungprasert emphasized CPF’s commitment to innovation in food production that promotes well-being, aligning with Bangchak’s efforts to convert used cooking oil into SAF. He noted the potential for future expansion of this initiative to CPF’s international operations.

“This partnership represents a major advancement in our sustainable business strategies and supports broader climate action initiatives by minimizing environmental impacts and maximizing resource efficiency,” he stated.

The construction of BSGF’s SAF production unit at Bangchak’s Phra Khanong Refinery is progressing, with over 70% completion and an anticipated start of production in early Q2 2025, initially capable of producing 1 million liters of SAF per day.
