At the recent EU Energy Council meeting, the significant rise in imports of biofuels derived from palm oil mill effluent (POME) was addressed, with a focus on preventing fraud. This initiative was led by Ireland, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
The Union for the Promotion of Oil and Protein Crops (UFOP) praised the initiative, noting it was a necessary response to the situation. The UFOP highlighted the Renewable Energies Directive, which allows member states to count biofuels from palm oil mill effluent double toward their quota obligations.
The UFOP urged the European Commission to take responsibility for ensuring that the raw materials used comply with the procedural innovations required by Article 28 (6) of the Renewable Energy Directive 2018/2001 (RED II). This article stipulates that “raw materials that can only be processed using advanced technologies will be included in Annex IX Part A.”
