First biogenic CO2 delivered from Tønder Biogas to Kassø Power-to-X facility

European Energy has received its first truckload of biogenic CO₂ from Tønder Biogas.
The CO₂ will be used for the company’s Power-to-X facility in Kassø, where it will play a key role in the production of e-methanol. European Energy, through its subsidiary Ammongas, is developing carbon capture (CCU and CCS) technology in southern Denmark via a new CO₂ liquefaction facility at Tønder Biogas – one of the largest biogas plants in Europe.

This facility, which is now commissioned, will capture, purify and liquefy biogenic CO₂.
It has the capacity to produce 48,000 tonnes of liquefied CO₂ annually for European Energy’s renewable energy projects. The liquefaction unit has been engineered, constructed and commissioned by Ammongas a specialist in CO₂ liquefaction. Ammongas’ technology pre-conditions and polishes raw CO₂ before compression, dehydration and condensation, ensuring a purity level exceeding 99%.

A significant portion of the captured CO₂ will be delivered to European Energy’s Kassø e-methanol facility, where it will be a crucial component in producing e-methanol – a sustainable fuel and chemical essential for decarbonising industry and transportation. By capturing and repurposing biogenic CO₂, the project supports emissions reduction and promotes circularity in renewable energy production. In addition, it serves as a prime example of Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU).

This high-purity CO₂ is highly versatile and suitable for sequestration, food-grade applications or green fuel production, said the company. “The first delivery of biogenic CO₂ from Tønder Biogas to our Kassø facility is a major step towards scaling green fuel production in Denmark. By integrating carbon capture with Power-to-X, we are closing the carbon loop and paving the way for a more sustainable energy future,” said Jaime Casasus-Bribian, CEO of Ammongas.
