Moeve signs strategic Biofuel Supply Agreement with Grupo Armas Trasmediterránea in Canary Islands

Moeve has entered into a strategic partnership with Grupo Armas Trasmediterránea to supply second-generation (2G) marine biofuels in the Canary Islands. Under this long-term agreement, approximately 40,000 tons of biofuel will be delivered through December 2025, with an option to extend into 2026.

This marks Moeve’s largest biofuel supply contract to date and its first venture in the Canary Islands, further solidifying the company’s leadership in providing sustainable solutions for maritime transport. The agreement also represents a significant step forward in the region’s push toward decarbonization, an area where Moeve has had a strong presence for nearly a century and remains committed to supporting the maritime sector’s energy transition.

“This agreement with Grupo Armas Trasmediterránea is a key milestone for us,” said Samir Fernández, Director of Marine Fuel Solutions at Moeve. “It strengthens our role in the decarbonization of maritime transport in the Canary Islands and supports our broader goal of expanding across Spain while reinforcing our leadership in the marine biofuel market.”

Grupo Armas Trasmediterránea CEO Sergio Vélez highlighted the agreement as an important step in the company’s sustainability roadmap. “We’re not starting from zero—we’ve been working on reducing our environmental footprint for years, from optimizing routes to pioneering the use of biofuels,” he noted. “This partnership reinforces our commitment to sustainable shipping and protecting the marine environment, which is both our workplace and a shared heritage we must preserve.”

As part of the rollout, both companies have met with port authorities in the Canary Islands to underscore the significance of the agreement. Beatriz Calzada, President of the Las Palmas Port Authority, stated the initiative aligns with the port’s broader strategy to adopt green fuels and deliver top-tier services. Meanwhile, Pedro Suárez, President of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port Authority, emphasized the region’s proactive stance on energy transition. “This first supply of biofuel marks a major milestone in supporting cleaner port operations and enhancing our ports’ competitiveness,” he said.

Moeve’s 2G biofuels are produced at its San Roque Energy Park in Cádiz and La Rábida Energy Park in Huelva. The company already supplies major Spanish ports such as Algeciras, Barcelona, Ceuta, and Huelva. These renewable fuels can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 90% over their life cycle compared to conventional fuels. They are fully compatible with existing engines and infrastructure, allowing for immediate use without the need for additional investment—an important advantage in advancing decarbonization in sectors like maritime transport.

With more than 90 years of experience in maritime fuel supply and operations in over 60 Spanish ports, Moeve maintains an extensive presence across the value chain. This enables the company to streamline operations and offer competitive solutions.

This initiative forms part of Moeve’s broader 2030 Positive Motion strategy, aimed at spearheading sustainable mobility across heavy transport sectors—land, sea, and air. By 2030, Moeve aims to become the leading producer of biofuels in Spain and Portugal, targeting an annual production capacity of 2.5 million tons.
