Neste and United Airlines have strengthened their collaboration by expanding the supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to three additional major airports in the United States. Under the new agreement, United becomes the first commercial airline to use SAF for flights departing from George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston, Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey, and Dulles International Airport (IAD) in Washington, D.C.
As part of the deal, Neste will provide neat Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™, which will be blended with conventional jet fuel to meet required specifications.
Deliveries to George Bush Airport began in July 2025 and will continue through October 2025, while supplies to Newark and Dulles commenced in September 2025 and will run until the end of the year. The SAF is being transported through existing pipeline infrastructure from Neste’s terminal facilities in Houston.
“Introducing sustainable aviation fuel for the first time at our hubs in Houston, Newark, and Dulles marks another important milestone in United’s sustainability journey,” said Lauren Riley, United’s Chief Sustainability Officer. “United remains the leading SAF user in the U.S., consuming more than 4,300 metric tons (13 million gallons) last year. However, we recognize that expanding the SAF market requires policy support. We will continue to work with partners like Neste and policymakers to encourage incentives that promote lower-carbon energy.”
Carl Nyberg, Senior Vice President, Commercial, Renewable Products at Neste, emphasized the importance of policy frameworks to accelerate SAF production.
“We are delighted to help United expand its SAF use to new U.S. markets,” Nyberg said. “To reach the aviation industry’s net-zero carbon emission goal by 2050, more states must adopt proven policy incentives. Neste is fully committed to supporting our customers’ emission reduction goals by scaling up SAF production and supply.”
This latest agreement builds on the companies’ existing partnership. Neste has been supplying SAF to United at Chicago O’Hare International Airport since August 2024, following the introduction of a state-level SAF purchase credit in Illinois, which made United the first airline to use SAF at the airport. United has also used Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ at San Francisco International Airport, where California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) supports the adoption of renewable fuels.
