Neste extends sustainable aviation fuel supply to Ontario International Airport through deal with Amazon Air

Neste has finalized a deal with Amazon to supply 7,500 metric tons (approximately 2.5 million gallons) of neat Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ (SAF) for use in Amazon Air’s cargo operations at San Francisco International Airport and Ontario International Airport in California, with deliveries scheduled through the end of 2025. This partnership marks Amazon as the first company to utilize SAF at Ontario International Airport, one of the country’s top 10 cargo hubs.

The agreement underscores Amazon’s broader strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions across its global operations by 2040. Integrating SAF into its air cargo network is a significant step in Amazon’s decarbonization efforts, as aviation is a major contributor to its overall emissions. Amazon’s collaboration with Neste began in 2021, when the fuel provider first supplied SAF to Amazon at Germany’s Cologne Bonn Airport.

Neste’s SAF is produced from renewable waste and residue raw materials, such as used cooking oil and animal fat waste, and is blended with conventional jet fuel before being supplied to Amazon Air’s network at both California airports. The initial deliveries were made earlier this year. For San Francisco International Airport, the fuel is transported directly via existing pipeline infrastructure, while at Ontario International Airport, SAF is delivered by truck from Neste’s Los Angeles terminal, with Diesel Direct—Neste’s long-term partner—handling logistics. Notably, Diesel Direct powers its delivery trucks with Neste’s renewable diesel, further reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with fuel transport.

Carl Nyberg, Senior Vice President of Commercial, Renewable Products at Neste, emphasized that this milestone demonstrates the practical availability of SAF for airlines and cargo operators at major airports. He highlighted the importance of supply chain solutions that leverage renewable fuels to reduce emissions across various modes of transportation.

Sustainable aviation fuel like Neste MY SAF can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% over its lifecycle compared to fossil jet fuel, according to Neste. The fuel is fully compatible with existing aircraft engines and airport fueling infrastructure, making it a practical solution for airlines and cargo carriers aiming to meet ambitious climate targets.

Amazon’s move aligns with a growing trend among logistics and air cargo companies to adopt SAF as a key tool for decarbonizing air transport. FedEx, for example, recently secured over three million gallons of blended SAF from Neste for use at Los Angeles International Airport, reflecting the industry-wide push to scale up sustainable fuel adoption.

The expansion of SAF usage at key U.S. airports not only supports Amazon’s sustainability goals but also signals a broader shift in the aviation sector toward renewable energy solutions, as companies seek to address regulatory pressures and consumer demand for greener logistics.
