Firefly Green Fuels, a developer of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Sanepar, one of Brazil’s largest water and sanitation companies. The agreement strengthens Firefly’s access to sustainable feedstocks for biofuel production while broadening its presence in the growing Brazilian and Latin American markets.
Under the partnership, Firefly and Sanepar will explore opportunities to convert locally sourced biosolids (sewage) into advanced biofuels, including SAF. Sanepar’s extensive infrastructure network makes it a crucial partner for securing a reliable feedstock supply, which is essential to meet the rising global demand for SAF.
This collaboration marks an important milestone for Firefly, ensuring a stable and diversified feedstock pipeline for its SAF production. By leveraging Brazil’s abundant waste resources, Firefly aims to enhance its global presence and assist aviation companies in their efforts to decarbonise operations.
“Brazil has become a global leader in biofuels, and this partnership with Sanepar reinforces Firefly’s position in this fast-expanding market,” said James Hygate, CEO of Firefly Green Fuels. “This MoU underscores our commitment to decarbonising aviation and addressing climate change. With the Brazilian government actively promoting biofuels through new legislation and incentives, we are excited about the opportunities this partnership will bring to our company and customers.”
Brazil, long a key player in the biofuels industry, is further solidifying its renewable energy leadership with recent policy developments. In 2024, the government introduced measures to expand biofuel production, including mandates to increase biofuel content in transport fuels and investments in new SAF production technologies.
