Vardhan Group signs two tripartite agreements to establish 18 TPD CBG plants in Bihar

Vardhan Group has signed two tripartite agreements to establish compressed biogas (CBG) plants in Bettiah and Gopalganj districts of Bihar, with both projects scheduled for commissioning in 2027.

Vardhan Group has signed two tripartite agreements to establish compressed biogas (CBG) plants in Bettiah and Gopalganj districts of Bihar, with both projects scheduled for commissioning in 2027. Each facility is planned to have a capacity of 18 tonnes per day (TPD), adding to the proposed development of bioenergy infrastructure in the state.

According to the project details provided, the Bettiah plant is targeted for commissioning in May 2027, while the Gopalganj facility is scheduled for November 2027. Together, the projects represent a planned CBG production capacity of 36 tonnes per day, subject to implementation of both facilities as scheduled.

The agreements cover the development of two separate compressed biogas facilities in Bettiah and Gopalganj. Both projects have a stated production capacity of 18 TPD, although details regarding feedstock supply, investment, technology providers and the parties to the tripartite agreements have not been provided in the available information.

CBG is produced by upgrading biogas generated through the anaerobic digestion of organic materials, such as agricultural residues, animal waste and other suitable biodegradable feedstocks. The resulting gas can be used as a fuel, depending on its quality and compliance with applicable specifications.

The staggered schedule places the planned commissioning of the second facility six months after the first. Actual commissioning will depend on project execution, construction progress, feedstock arrangements, regulatory approvals and the establishment of supporting infrastructure. The available information does not confirm the projects’ current construction status.

Bioenergy Business Analysis

The planned Bettiah and Gopalganj projects could strengthen Vardhan Group’s presence in Bihar’s compressed biogas sector, with a combined proposed capacity of 36 TPD. Their significance will depend not only on installed capacity but also on reliable feedstock sourcing, plant utilisation and access to buyers.

For both facilities, securing a consistent supply of suitable organic material will be a central operational consideration. Feedstock availability, seasonal variations, transportation costs and processing efficiency can affect production costs and plant performance. However, the feedstock mix and sourcing arrangements for these projects have not been disclosed in the information available for this report.

India’s CBG sector received a significant policy boost in 2026 with the introduction of the GOBARdhan scheme, which brings together measures for offtake assurance, pricing, capital assistance, pipeline infrastructure and credit support. These provisions are intended to address several commercial barriers faced by CBG developers.

The six-month gap between the targeted commissioning dates provides two separate milestones against which progress can be assessed. Construction, equipment installation, feedstock logistics, gas upgrading and market connectivity will all influence whether the facilities can begin operations on schedule.
