Vietjet Air operates first flights using sustainable aviation fuel in Vietnam

Vietjet Air made history today with the launch of the first flights using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) refueled in Vietnam, departing from Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City. The inaugural flights, bound for Melbourne, Australia, and Incheon, South Korea, were fueled by Petrolimex Aviation. Sustainable aviation fuel in Vietnam is also gaining momentum.

SAF is derived from renewable sources such as used cooking oil, agricultural residues, wood biomass, and municipal waste, offering a potential reduction in carbon emissions of up to 80% compared to conventional fossil fuels. The fuel meets stringent international aviation standards, making it safe for commercial operations. These flights signify a significant advancement for both Vietjet and the broader Vietnamese aviation sector.

According to the press release, Đinh Viet Thang, Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, stated, “The successful execution of these first international flights using SAF demonstrates Vietjet Air and Petrolimex Aviation’s dedication to sustainable fuel practices. This achievement is a point of pride for the entire industry as we contribute to environmental protection and sustainable development, underscoring Vietnam’s role in the global aviation community.”

Pham Van Thanh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam National Petroleum Group, emphasized that this milestone in SAF refueling reflects a strategic vision for the company up to 2030 and beyond. “This step is essential for us to evolve into a green and environmentally friendly energy corporation,” he said, reiterating the group’s commitment to advancing SAF research and supply.

Vietjet CEO Đinh Viet Phuong remarked that today’s flights symbolize a commitment to eco-friendly air travel, enhancing the flying experience for passengers on international routes. “As a leader in SAF research and implementation, Vietjet is dedicated to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable growth in aviation,” he added.

The airline has established partnerships with international entities to further develop and implement SAF, aligning with Vietnam’s pledge at COP26 to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

SAF is being positioned as the future of aviation fuel, with production costs anticipated to decrease, paving the way for its widespread commercial adoption.

This development is part of Vietjet’s broader commitment to environmental sustainability, which has been in place since its early days. The airline has pioneered several initiatives, including transitioning to electronic tickets, promoting online check-in, and utilizing eco-friendly materials. Vietjet actively participates in environmental programs, such as tree planting and ocean clean-ups, reinforcing its role as a responsible corporate citizen, the press release further added.

As a frontrunner in sustainable practices, Vietjet has produced a comprehensive ESG sustainability report and is focused on advancing the use of SAF in support of Vietnam’s national green growth strategy and net-zero emissions goals by 2050.
