Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners finalizes investment decision for Northwich Facility

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), through its CI Advanced Bioenergy Fund I (CI ABF I), has reached a final investment decision to acquire a combined pre-treatment and biogas facility from Ørsted in Northwich, United Kingdom. The existing facility currently features a pre-treatment unit for municipal solid waste and a biogas plant that generates electricity for the national grid.

Plans for Refurbishment and Expansion

Following the acquisition, CIP intends to refurbish and convert the site into a dedicated biogas production facility, subject to obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals. The planned upgrades include the installation of a new digester, biomethane upgrading systems, and carbon capture technology. These enhancements aim to enable the production of both biomethane and liquid biogenic carbon.

Refurbishment and expansion work is expected to begin in 2026, with the upgraded facility scheduled to commence operations by 2028. Once operational, the plant will be capable of processing more than 170,000 tonnes of feedstock each year.

Continued Growth in European Biogas Investments

This project follows CIP’s recent investment activity in the bioenergy sector. In September 2025, CI ABF I approved the final investment decision for the Nivalan Biokaasu biogas facility in Finland. That facility is projected to produce over 200 GWh of biomethane annually, with construction beginning in late 2025 and operations expected to start in the second half of 2027.

Both projects reflect CIP’s ongoing commitment to advancing renewable energy infrastructure and expanding biomethane production capacity across Europe.
