Anil Nair joins Waga Energy as US Energy Director to strengthen RNG operations

Anil Nair has joined Waga Energy as Energy Director for the US. His priorities include expanding the company's US Energy team and advancing landfill gas-to-renewable natural gas projects.

Waga Energy has appointed Anil Nair as Energy Director for the United States, strengthening its leadership as it expands its renewable natural gas (RNG) operations and landfill gas upgrading projects across North America.

Nair announced the appointment through LinkedIn, highlighting his previous experience developing renewable natural gas and low-carbon fuel projects at Shell and LanzaJet.

In his new role, Nair will focus on building Waga Energy’s US Energy team, advancing project development and bringing more renewable natural gas production to market.

The appointment comes as Waga Energy seeks to expand the deployment of its proprietary WAGABOX® technology, which converts landfill gas into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas. The technology is designed to make gas recovery and upgrading commercially viable at medium-sized and smaller landfills that may be overlooked by conventional systems.

Waga Energy Expands Its US Renewable Natural Gas Portfolio

Waga Energy has developed projects across the United States, Europe and Canada, using landfill gas as a feedstock for renewable natural gas production. It specialises in recovering methane from landfill gas and upgrading it into renewable natural gas suitable for injection into natural gas networks.

WAGABOX combines membrane separation and cryogenic distillation to remove carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen and other impurities from landfill gas. The process produces high-purity biomethane that can be supplied through existing gas infrastructure.

An important feature of the technology is its ability to process landfill gas with varying compositions and flow rates, potentially extending RNG production opportunities to smaller and medium-sized landfill sites.

Its business model involves developing and operating gas-upgrading facilities in partnership with landfill owners. The resulting RNG can be injected into natural gas networks and supplied to energy markets.

The company’s focus on smaller and medium-sized landfills addresses a segment of the market where the economics of conventional gas upgrading infrastructure may present challenges.

Expanding this project portfolio will require coordination between landfill operators, gas infrastructure providers, energy buyers and regulatory stakeholders.

Anil Nair Brings Experience from Shell and LanzaJet

Before joining Waga Energy, Nair worked on renewable natural gas and low-carbon fuel projects at Shell and LanzaJet.

In his LinkedIn announcement, he highlighted his interest in joining a company with commercially deployed technology that converts landfill gas into renewable natural gas.

Nair said his priorities would include expanding the US Energy team and ensuring that more of the renewable gas produced through Waga Energy’s projects reaches the market.

He also expressed interest in reconnecting with industry participants and developing new partnerships across the US RNG sector. He acknowledged Tanguy Largeau, Lucie Tonnellier and Guénaël Prince for welcoming him to the company.

Bioenergy Business Analysis

Nair’s appointment highlights the growing importance of commercial development and market access in the US renewable natural gas sector. The appointment also brings experience from two companies active in renewable and low-carbon fuels. This background could support Waga Energy’s efforts to develop projects, establish commercial partnerships and expand RNG sales in the US market.

Waga Energy’s focus on smaller and medium-sized landfills is particularly relevant because project viability depends on landfill gas volumes, methane concentration, collection efficiency, upgrading costs and access to pipeline infrastructure. However, scaling the business will depend on securing reliable landfill gas supplies, long-term offtake agreements, competitive project economics and favourable regulatory conditions.
