Clariant announces joint venture for novel flame retardants with FUHUA

Clariant, a global specialty chemicals company with a strong focus on sustainability, has announced a strategic joint venture with FUHUA aimed at developing innovative non-halogenated flame retardants. The collaboration, pending customary regulatory approvals, seeks to create next-generation phosphorus-based flame retardants for key industries including construction, automotive, and electronics.

This initiative responds to tightening global regulations and increasing technical requirements in flame retardant applications, reinforcing Clariant’s commitment to sustainability-driven innovation.

Strengthening Innovation Through Strategic Collaboration

The joint venture builds on an existing innovation and R&D partnership between Clariant and FUHUA, a leading enterprise in integrated chemical manufacturing. By combining Clariant’s expertise in specialty additives with FUHUA’s production capabilities, the partnership aims to accelerate the development of sustainable, high-performance flame retardant technologies.

Both companies are committed to creating non-halogenated flame retardants that not only meet evolving regulatory demands but also enhance product performance. The initiative positions the joint venture to convert regulatory challenges into opportunities for innovation, delivering sustainable value for customers across industries.

Leadership Perspectives on the Partnership

“This joint venture marks a significant step in our commitment to developing flame retardants that address both performance and regulatory requirements,” said Angela Cackovich, Business President Adsorbents & Additives and EMEA, and member of Clariant’s Executive Steering Committee. “By partnering with FUHUA, a recognized leader in integrated chemical manufacturing, we are combining expertise to deliver solutions that help our customers stay ahead of regulatory changes while maintaining the highest standards of performance.”

Manuel Mueller, Head of Strategy & Innovation at Clariant, added, “This strategic cooperation highlights Clariant’s focused approach to innovation in the additives sector. Our partnership with FUHUA is another important step in advancing products that align with our core values of sustainability, regulatory compliance, and performance excellence.”

Anticipating Global Regulatory Shifts

As governments worldwide tighten regulations on traditional flame retardant technologies, Clariant’s proactive strategy enables it to anticipate and respond to these changes ahead of industry demand. The company’s forward-thinking development of compliant, phosphorus-based alternatives strengthens its position as a leader in sustainable specialty chemicals.

Continued Investment in China and Global Expansion

This new joint venture follows Clariant’s recent expansion efforts in China. On November 5, the company celebrated the completion of a CHF 100 million investment at its Daya Bay facility, adding a second production line for Exolit™ OP flame retardants. Earlier, on November 3, Clariant inaugurated a second production line for its Nylostab S-EED stabilizer in Cangzhou.

These milestones underscore Clariant’s long-term commitment to innovation, sustainability, and its growing presence in the Chinese market.
