Spring GDS announces launch of Book & Claim solution for Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Spring GDS, a global leader in cross-border logistics, has unveiled a new Book & Claim solution for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), aimed at cutting emissions from air travel while helping businesses meet their sustainability targets through reliable, transparent reporting.

This marks a key milestone in Spring GDS’s ambition to reach Net Zero emissions by 2040. Building on the success of its HVO100 biofuel initiative, which has already slashed road transport emissions by up to 90%, the company is expanding its sustainability efforts to the aviation sector.

A Vital Step in Decarbonising Air Transport

Currently, the aviation industry contributes approximately 2.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, a figure that could rise to 22% by 2050 without significant action. Spring GDS’s new SAF Book & Claim model offers a solution, allowing businesses to reduce the carbon footprint of their air freight without needing direct access to the fuel itself.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel: The Future of Jet Fuel

Sustainable Aviation Fuel is a next-generation jet fuel produced from renewable sources such as used cooking oil, agricultural residues, and animal fats. Compared to conventional jet fuel, SAF can cut CO₂ emissions by as much as 80% over its lifecycle, providing immediate climate benefits with no need for modifications to existing aircraft or fueling systems.

Spring GDS has secured a large supply of SAF, ensuring that businesses can access verified emission reductions. Through the Book & Claim mechanism, customers can choose the proportion of SAF they’d like to claim for their air shipments, effectively reducing their emissions even in regions where SAF is not readily available.

Transparency and Certification at Every Step

Each SAF transaction is independently verified in line with ISCC standards and recorded on the supplier’s blockchain platform, ensuring full transparency and preventing the risk of double counting. Customers receive detailed reports, compliant with global standards like the GHG Protocol, to help meet their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) requirements.

Revolutionizing Logistics Sustainability

The Book & Claim model is a groundbreaking solution that decouples the physical fuel from the environmental claim of its benefits. This means businesses can participate in reducing emissions even in areas where the supply of SAF is still limited.

Spring GDS oversees the entire process—sourcing and purchasing SAF from certified suppliers, assigning verified emission reductions to customer shipments, and offering comprehensive documentation to support ESG and Scope 3 emissions disclosures.

This approach represents a shift from traditional carbon offsetting to insetting, focusing on reducing emissions directly within the logistics value chain itself.

“True Climate Progress Happens at the Source”

“Decarbonizing logistics requires collaboration, innovation, and accountability,” said Tatum Bross, Project Manager of ESG at Spring GDS. “Our Book & Claim solution empowers customers to take concrete action on air transport emissions, with measurable results, complete traceability, and verified climate impact. Carbon offsetting alone isn’t enough—real progress happens when we decarbonize at the source.”

Expanding a Proven Sustainability Model

Spring GDS’s Book & Claim solution builds on the success of its HVO100 biofuel program, which has already reduced road transport emissions by up to 90% across Europe. The same sustainable principles are now being applied to the aviation industry.

By integrating both ground and air sustainability initiatives, Spring GDS offers a comprehensive, end-to-end decarbonization framework for the global logistics and e-commerce sectors.

With this new step forward, Spring GDS is leading the way in making air transport more sustainable and helping its customers achieve tangible emissions reductions.
