Swiss greentech company Kanadevia Inova has acquired a controlling interest in the operating business of Dutch biogas platform BioValue, strengthening its presence in Northern Europe and expanding its capabilities across the development, operation and management of biogas and biomethane assets.
The acquired business will operate as Kanadevia Inova BioValue, with BioValue founder Ids Schaap retaining a minority stake through his company and continuing as CEO. The transaction brings 23 biomethane specialists into Kanadevia Inova, covering asset management, operations and maintenance, engineering and construction management.
The acquisition also includes several long-term service contracts and future engineering and construction contracts. Kanadevia Inova will additionally acquire the remaining 15% stake in the Cothen biomethane plant, further increasing its ownership of the facility. The deal gives Kanadevia Inova a larger operational base in the Netherlands and strengthens its ability to support and expand existing biogas and biomethane plants.
BioValue has developed expertise in asset management, plant operations and maintenance, engineering and construction management. Its portfolio includes the Cothen biomethane plant, a co-digestion facility with an annual processing capacity of 90,000 tonnes that produces 100 GWh of renewable energy.
The Cothen facility was commissioned in less than 16 months, according to the announcement. BioValue has combined internal process engineering and operational capabilities with specialist partners to develop and manage biomethane infrastructure.
For Kanadevia Inova, the transaction adds operational expertise alongside its existing technology and engineering capabilities. The company said the combination will allow it to strengthen customer support while expanding its contribution to waste-management decarbonisation and energy resilience.
Kanadevia Inova CEO Bruno-Frederic Baudouin said the BioValue team had delivered strong results over the past decade and that bringing the business into the group would strengthen its market offering and customer support.
Continuity for BioValue customers
Despite the change in ownership, BioValue’s existing technical and management teams will continue working with customers. This is intended to preserve established relationships and service continuity while giving the business access to Kanadevia Inova’s wider technology, engineering and international resources.
Ids Schaap, who will lead Kanadevia Inova BioValue as CEO, said the combination of BioValue’s local biomethane expertise with Kanadevia Inova’s technology and international experience would support the company’s next phase of growth.
The transaction therefore combines two distinct capabilities: BioValue’s experience in operating and managing biomethane assets in the Dutch market and Kanadevia Inova’s broader technology and international infrastructure platform.
Asset management becomes a larger strategic focus
The acquisition also fits Kanadevia Inova’s strategy to expand its Asset Management unit. The company said its operating portfolio currently comprises 17 plants across the UK, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Sweden and the United States.
For biomethane developers and operators, asset management is increasingly important as projects move beyond construction and into long-term operations. The acquisition gives Kanadevia Inova additional in-house experience across plant operations, maintenance, engineering and asset management rather than focusing solely on new project development.
The transaction also provides an established operating platform in the Netherlands, alongside contracts that extend beyond the existing plant portfolio.
Bioenergy Business Analysis
The BioValue acquisition points to a broader shift in the biomethane sector towards the consolidation of development, engineering and long-term asset-management capabilities. Rather than treating plant construction and operations as separate activities, Kanadevia Inova is combining technical delivery with operational expertise under a larger international platform.
The Cothen stake and the transfer of BioValue’s 23 specialists are particularly relevant because they provide Kanadevia Inova with both physical operating exposure and an experienced team. For investors and project developers, the transaction highlights the value of operational knowledge as biomethane assets move through their long-term operating lives.
For Kanadevia Inova, the immediate strategic advantage is a stronger Northern European foothold and a larger Asset Management platform. The ability to retain BioValue’s existing team and leadership could also help preserve operational continuity while integrating the business into a wider international network.
