Indonesia unveils action plan for sustainable aviation fuels at Bali International Airshow

The Indonesian government has launched an action plan aimed at developing sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) during the 2024 Bali International Airshow (BIAS). Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, made the announcement at the event in Badung, Bali, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions.

“We are initiating our development action plan for efficient sustainable fuels,” Pandjaitan said. He added that a meeting will soon be convened to establish a roadmap for implementing SAF by exploring potential resources.

The minister identified coconut oil, seaweed, and rice dregs as promising materials for SAF production. “We will hold a meeting shortly to discuss the roadmap and will begin executing plans to identify environmentally friendly resources for the aviation sector,” he noted.

Furthermore, he expressed intentions to engage state-owned oil company Pertamina in collaborative studies with various airlines regarding the use of these resources.

“Our economy is being recognized for its potential, driven by advancements in downstreaming, digitalization, electronic catalogs, and abundant mineral resources. Indonesia is seen as a central player,” he stated.

During the event, he underscored the seriousness of these efforts in ensuring a sustainable future. The initiative to develop eco-friendly aviation fuel is also a key focus at this aerospace exhibition, attended by Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) on September 17.

In a panel discussion, Sumadi highlighted Indonesia’s commitment to transitioning from fossil-based aviation fuels to sustainable alternatives, aligning with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) agenda that emphasizes the vital role of SAF and Low Carbon Aviation Fuels (LCAF) in mitigating CO2 emissions.
