Six energy companies from Europe and Algeria have come together to explore the feasibility of large-scale green hydrogen production in Algeria and its transport to Europe via the proposed ‘SoutH2 Corridor’ project.
This ambitious 3,300-kilometre hydrogen pipeline aims to link North Africa with Italy, Austria, and Germany, with the potential to meet 40 percent of Europe’s hydrogen import goals by 2030.
The partnership includes German energy firm VNG, Italian gas grid operator SNAM, Sea Corridor (Italy), and Austrian electricity provider VERBUND, which have signed a letter of intent with Algerian energy giants Sonatrach and Sonelgaz. Together, they will assess the technical and economic viability of the entire green hydrogen value chain, from production in Algeria to distribution across Europe.
This collaboration builds on a prior agreement reached in February 2024, under which VNG committed to purchasing pipeline gas from Sonatrach. Additionally, Germany and Algeria are in the process of establishing a bilateral hydrogen task force to further enhance cooperation in the clean energy sector.
