The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) is exploring the potential for producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) using locally sourced coconut oil. In a recent statement, the PCA announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Japan’s Manryu Co., Ltd. to initiate research and development aimed at bringing SAF to market.
“This agreement marks a significant step towards positioning the Philippines as a key player in the global biofuel sector,” the PCA noted.
According to the media report, the partnership will focus on maximizing the use of local coconut oil for biofuel production. “By utilizing Manryu’s innovative Maeda Method for manufacturing biodiesel and SAF, we anticipate enhanced safety features and more cost-effective production,” the PCA added. As part of its renewable energy initiatives, the Department of Energy mandates that all diesel sold in the Philippines must contain a 3% blend of coco methyl ester (CME), which is set to increase to 4% by October 1, 2025, and to 5% by the following year.

The PCA will provide access to its research facilities and high-quality coconut oil, while Manryu will contribute its technology and equipment for the production of SAF and biodiesel.
“Together, both organizations will conduct research, experiments, and testing to refine the production process and ensure compliance with global aviation fuel standards,” the PCA stated.
