Amravati Approves ₹100 Crore BPCL Biogas Project with 10-Tonne Daily Capacity

Amravati Municipal Corporation has approved a ₹100 crore biogas project that will convert wet waste and other organic residues into biogas, with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) set to develop the facility on 7.5 acres of municipal land at Sukli.

The project was cleared at the municipal corporation’s general body meeting following an extended discussion. The proposed facility will be located alongside the existing solid waste management project and is planned to process organic waste generated by the city, industrial units in the district and agricultural activities.

BPCL to develop facility on municipal land

As reported by Navbharat, The Amravati Municipal Corporation will use 7.5 acres of land acquired in 2011 for the project. The site is located near the existing solid waste management facility at Sukli, allowing the proposed biogas operation to be integrated with the city’s waste-management infrastructure.

The project is based on organic waste generated across Amravati and surrounding industrial and agricultural activities. The proposed feedstock mix includes wet waste from the city, organic by-products from industrial projects in the district and agricultural waste from farmers’ fields.

The municipal general body approved the project after a detailed discussion. Mayor Shrichand Tejwani announced the decision following the municipal commissioner’s address.

Plant construction expected to take two years

Municipal Commissioner Mangesh Gondawale said construction is expected to take around two years once the municipal approval and authorised agreement with BPCL are completed.

The facility is designed for proposed production of approximately 10 tonnes of biogas per day. The project therefore links municipal waste management with the recovery of energy from organic waste streams.

BPCL is reported to provide the municipal corporation with a ₹37,000 deposit and annual rent of ₹1,50,500 for use of the land.

Project linked to Swachh Bharat Mission

The project has also been reported as receiving approval under the central government’s Swachh Bharat Mission.

The municipal corporation’s decision follows a visit by a joint delegation comprising the mayor, deputy mayor and group leaders of various political parties to a similar project in Khandala village in Aheri tehsil of Maharashtra’s Satara district. The delegation visited the facility to understand its operations before the Amravati project moved forward.

Bioenergy Business Analysis

The proposed Amravati project illustrates how municipal organic waste, industrial by-products and agricultural residues can be brought together as feedstock for a waste-to-energy facility. Locating the plant alongside the existing solid waste management project at Sukli could also support a more integrated approach to organic waste handling.

The next significant steps are the completion of the authorised agreement between the municipal corporation and BPCL and subsequent construction of the facility. With approximately 10 tonnes of daily biogas production proposed, the project will add a dedicated bioenergy component to Amravati’s municipal waste-management infrastructure.
