Sunoil Biodiesel secures approval to supply sustainable fuels in Belgium

The Dutch producer is expanding its European market reach while highlighting traceability, sustainability compliance and waste-based biodiesel production.

Dutch biofuel producer Sunoil Biodiesel has secured regulatory approval to supply its sustainable fuels in Belgium, adding another European market to its distribution footprint.

The approval allows Sunoil to distribute its waste-based biodiesel products in Belgium and comes as the company continues to expand its operations across Europe.

Belgium approval expands Sunoil’s European reach

Sunoil said regulatory approval for a new market requires more than identifying commercial opportunities. The company highlighted supply-chain traceability, sustainability systems and compliance with local regulatory requirements as key requirements for entering new markets.

According to Sunoil, these systems provide a foundation for further European expansion.

The company converts certified waste oils and fats into biodiesel at facilities in Emmen and Kampen in the Netherlands, with trading operations based in Amsterdam.

Its biodiesel products are marketed as lower-emission alternatives to, or blend components for, fossil diesel in the road, marine and energy sectors.

B100 biodiesel powers inland barge

Sunoil’s market expansion follows a recent application of its biodiesel in marine transport.

The company’s inland barge Birjo II has been converted to operate entirely on B100 biodiesel, according to Sunoil. The fuel is produced in the Netherlands and supplied in partnership with BFT Tanker Logistics.

The vessel is now transporting biofuel using 100% renewable bunkers, demonstrating an application for waste-based biodiesel in inland marine transport.

The announcement does not provide fuel-consumption data, emissions reductions or other performance figures for the vessel.

Waste oils and fats remain core feedstocks

Sunoil’s production model is based on converting certified waste oils and fats into biodiesel.

This gives the company a supply chain spanning feedstock processing, biodiesel production and trading, with its production facilities in Emmen and Kampen supporting distribution into European markets.

The Belgium approval adds another destination for these products, although Sunoil has not disclosed the volume it expects to supply to the Belgian market or any specific customers under the new authorisation.
