InnoVent wins major process technology licensing deal with ethanol producer Westwell Biorefineries

InnoVent Technology LLC has secured a major process technology licensing agreement with Westwell Biorefineries Ltd for its Multi Purpose Ester (MPE) technology, opening a new downstream product route for ethanol produced in India.

InnoVent Technology LLC has secured a major process technology licensing agreement with Westwell Biorefineries Ltd for its Multi Purpose Ester (MPE) technology, opening a new downstream product route for ethanol produced in India.

The agreement covers the engineering, technology licensing, procurement, site start-up and supervision of an MPE facility that will produce higher-value ester derivatives from alcohol.

The announcement was made by Vibhu Sharma, CEO of InnoVent Technology, on LinkedIn. According to the announcement, the facility will be located in Northeast India and will enable Westwell to produce products including ethyl acetate, butyl acetate and butyl acrylate from alcohol feedstock.

InnoVent describes MPE as a flexible process that allows the production facility to switch between different ester products depending on market conditions and demand.

Ethanol moves into higher-value chemical products

The agreement represents a downstream diversification opportunity for ethanol producers, moving part of the value chain beyond fuel ethanol and into chemical intermediates and derivatives.

Westwell Biorefineries currently operates an ethanol production business in Bihar. Its website states that the company produces ethanol for supply to oil marketing companies and has expanded its grain-based ethanol capacity.

Environmental-clearance records also document a brownfield expansion proposal for Westwell’s grain-based ethanol plant at Rajapatti Kothi in Gopalganj, including an increase in distillery capacity from 200 KLPD to 325 KLPD and cogeneration capacity from 5 MW to 10 MW.

The new MPE project could therefore add a chemical-products dimension to an existing ethanol manufacturing platform.

MPE designed for multiple ester products

According to InnoVent’s announcement, its MPE technology was developed through pilot-plant testing, process simulation and scale-up work, alongside the use of a proprietary catalyst mix.

The company says the process is designed to consume less energy and water while maintaining high product yields. These performance claims are based on InnoVent’s own description of the technology and have not been independently verified by Bioenergy Business.

The ability to switch between different ester products is intended to give the plant flexibility to respond to changing market demand.

These chemicals have applications across industrial and chemical value chains, potentially allowing an ethanol producer to access markets beyond fuel blending.

InnoVent expands ethanol technology portfolio

InnoVent Technology provides process technology, engineering and digital solutions for chemical, oil and gas and renewable-energy industries. Its current team includes Gautam Pradhan as Technical Director. The company identifies Pradhan as having extensive process-engineering experience across oil and gas, petrochemicals, ethanol and related industries.

The Westwell project is described as the second licensing deal for InnoVent India led by Gautam Pradhan and his team.

InnoVent had previously announced another ethanol-sector project involving a forced-circulation multiple-effect evaporation system and additional process improvements for an Indian ethanol producer.

Northeast India project adds regional dimension

The location of the new facility in Northeast India could give the project significance beyond its individual technology scope, although the announcement does not identify the specific state or provide the project’s production capacity, investment value or commissioning schedule.

The multi-million-dollar project scope covers engineering, procurement and start-up support, but the announcement does not disclose the exact contract value.

For Westwell, the project provides a potential pathway to diversify its product portfolio from ethanol into higher-value chemical derivatives. For InnoVent, the agreement expands its technology licensing activity in India’s growing ethanol-processing sector.

Bioenergy Business Analysis

The project highlights an emerging opportunity for ethanol producers to capture additional value by integrating downstream chemical production with bio-based alcohol feedstocks. Rather than relying solely on fuel ethanol markets, producers can potentially use ethanol as a platform for producing higher-value chemical derivatives.

The commercial significance of the MPE project will ultimately depend on its production scale, operating performance, feedstock economics and demand for the individual ester products. The ability to switch between products could provide operational flexibility, but the project’s economics will also depend on the relative margins and market conditions for each derivative.

For India’s ethanol industry, such projects point towards a broader biorefinery model, where ethanol can serve not only as a renewable transport fuel but also as a feedstock for chemicals and materials.
