Vardhan Group has signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) agreement for a 10-tonne-per-day (TPD) compressed biogas (CBG) plant in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, with commissioning targeted for June–July 2027.
Under the turnkey contract, the group will provide engineering services, equipment and infrastructure for the proposed facility. The scope includes a membrane-based gas purification system, a biochemical hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) removal unit, pipeline design, and the fabrication of digesters and mixing tanks.
The project adds to the development of compressed biogas infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh, where facilities converting organic feedstocks into renewable gas can support waste management and alternative fuel production. However, the available announcement does not specify the plant’s feedstock, projected gas output, investment value or intended offtake arrangements.
Vardhan Group to Deliver Integrated Plant Infrastructure
The EPC agreement places Vardhan Group in charge of delivering multiple technical components required for the proposed CBG facility. The scope covers gas treatment, process infrastructure and equipment fabrication.
The gas purification system will use membrane technology to separate methane from the raw biogas stream. Membrane-based upgrading is used in CBG production to increase methane concentration by separating it from other components, including carbon dioxide.
The plant will also incorporate a biochemical scrubber for hydrogen sulphide removal. H₂S treatment is an important step in biogas processing because the compound is corrosive and can affect downstream equipment and gas quality.
In addition, the contract includes pipeline design and the fabrication of digesters and mixing tanks. These components form part of the infrastructure needed to process organic material, manage the digestion process and convey gas through the treatment system.
Gorakhpur Plant Targets Commissioning in 2027
The proposed facility is designed for a capacity of 10 TPD, although the announcement does not clarify whether this figure refers to raw biogas, upgraded gas or finished compressed biogas production.
Commissioning is planned for June or July 2027. The project timeline indicates a target rather than confirmation that the facility will begin commercial operations within that period.
Further information on the project will be needed to assess its expected contribution to local renewable gas supply. Details such as the feedstock mix, plant configuration, gas upgrading capacity, compression arrangements and connection to potential buyers have not been disclosed in the supplied announcement.
The project’s commercial outlook will also depend on factors including feedstock availability, operating costs, gas quality requirements and the development of reliable offtake arrangements.
Bioenergy Business Analysis
The Gorakhpur project highlights the role of EPC contractors in developing India’s compressed biogas infrastructure. Beyond digestion technology, successful CBG projects depend on the integration of gas purification, contaminant removal, equipment fabrication and pipeline systems into a reliable operating facility.
For the proposed 10 TPD plant, membrane-based upgrading and biochemical H₂S removal are relevant technical components. Their actual performance, however, will depend on feedstock characteristics, raw biogas composition, system design and operating conditions. The announcement does not provide performance guarantees or methane recovery figures, so the project’s expected efficiency cannot yet be assessed.
Feedstock sourcing and gas sales will be equally important to the project’s long-term viability. Without disclosed information on the organic material to be processed, expected daily gas production and intended buyers, its potential economics and contribution to regional fuel supply remain uncertain.
The June–July 2027 commissioning target provides a milestone against which future project progress can be measured. As construction advances, disclosure of investment costs, feedstock agreements, production estimates and offtake arrangements would help industry stakeholders evaluate the facility’s commercial prospects and its potential contribution to Uttar Pradesh’s CBG sector.
