Abia Health College plans commercial biogas production from Institutional Waste

Rector Aloysius Ekeleme Okezie said the college developed the initiative after management identified the volume of degradable waste and sewage generated across the institution. The planned project is expected to convert this waste into biogas for commercial use.

Waste management prompted biogas initiative

According to Okezie, waste disposal became an early challenge after he assumed leadership of the institution. He said the college had accumulated a large volume of refuse and other degradable materials, with N750,000 spent to evacuate the waste.

The waste-management problem prompted the institution to consider whether some of the material could instead be used as a resource.

Okezie said the management subsequently examined the sewage infrastructure serving the college’s hostels. He identified the male hostel, referred to as Bakassi Hotel, as having a large soakaway, while other hostels also have separate soakaways used for sewage disposal.

The institution’s assessment of these waste streams led to the idea of developing a biogas production system.

Sewage identified as potential feedstock

The project appears to be centred on using organic waste generated within the college as a feedstock for biogas production. However, the source does not specify the planned plant capacity, technology configuration, expected gas output or the precise mix of feedstocks that will be processed.

It also does not state whether the biogas will be used for electricity generation, cooking fuel, thermal applications or another commercial purpose.

The college’s stated objective is to move beyond conventional waste disposal and develop a revenue-generating activity around the waste produced on its premises.

Commercial production is planned to begin in October 2026, according to the rector. No construction cost, financing structure or expected revenue has been disclosed in the supplied material.

Institutional waste-to-energy opportunity

For a health sciences institution with multiple hostels and associated facilities, sewage and other organic waste can represent a continuous waste stream. The proposed project would seek to connect that waste stream with energy production rather than relying solely on disposal.

The approach also highlights the potential role of institutions such as colleges, hospitals and other large facilities in developing small-scale waste-to-energy systems. The proposed facility is being considered not only as a waste-management solution but also as a potential source of institutional revenue.

Okezie said the initiative emerged from management’s efforts to address the college’s waste challenge and identify productive uses for degradable material. The project therefore combines two objectives: reducing the burden associated with waste disposal and creating an opportunity to generate income from resources already available at the institution.

The college has not disclosed projected revenues or the commercial arrangements under which the biogas would be sold or used. Those details will be important in assessing the project’s financial model once further information becomes available.

Bioenergy Business Analysis

ABSCOHMAT’s proposed biogas project illustrates how institutional waste streams can potentially become inputs for decentralised energy production. The starting point in this case was a waste-disposal cost, with the college exploring whether organic material and sewage could instead support a revenue-generating energy operation.
