China Energy Engineering Corporation (Energy China) is strengthening its business engagement in Spain, with Chairman Ni Zhen holding talks on green hydrogen trade, green hydrogen and ammonia projects, industrial decarbonisation and integrated energy during a September visit. The company is also using its existing biomass project in Spain to build experience for wider European engineering activities.
Ni visited Spain from September 17 to 18, 2026, for a series of business activities involving Enso Energy and other Spanish green energy partners. Discussions focused on developing project-based cooperation across green hydrogen and ammonia, industrial decarbonisation, green fuels and energy systems.
Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Cooperation in Spain
In Madrid on September 18, Ni met Elias, CEO of Enso Energy, to discuss cooperation in Spain’s industrial decarbonisation market.
Enso said it has an established presence in Spain’s industrial decarbonisation sector, including industrial customers and project development capabilities. The company expressed interest in combining these resources with Energy China’s engineering and technology capabilities.
Energy China said it intends to advance existing cooperation with Enso while exploring additional opportunities in biomass energy, industrial decarbonisation and green fuels. The company highlighted its capabilities in technology research and development, engineering construction and industrial-chain integration.
Ni also met Spanish green energy partners on the same day. The discussions covered green hydrogen trade, green hydrogen and ammonia project development, industrial green and low-carbon transformation and energy security.
According to Energy China, both sides agreed to strengthen coordination around projects and deepen cooperation in green hydrogen and ammonia, industrial decarbonisation and integrated energy. The discussions also sought to accelerate progress in green hydrogen trade.
The disclosure does not identify specific hydrogen or ammonia projects, production capacities, investment amounts or commercial contracts resulting from the meetings.
ACOR Biomass Project Provides European EPC Experience
The Spain visit also included an inspection of Energy China’s ACOR biomass thermal power plant project.
Ni visited the project on September 17 to review construction progress and site management. Energy China is serving as the EPC general contractor for the project.
During the visit, Ni stressed safety and quality management and called for the project to be completed and commissioned to the required standards. He also highlighted the importance of learning from established European markets and developing professional and locally based teams capable of independently executing EPC projects in Europe.
The ACOR project therefore forms part of Energy China’s existing operational presence in Spain, alongside its efforts to develop additional business in clean energy and industrial decarbonisation.
Spain Identified as Key European Expansion Base
Energy China is also placing greater strategic emphasis on Spain as it expands its European business.
During a country-specific meeting and discussions involving EAG and the company’s Sino-Spanish Innovation Center, Ni said Spain should serve as the group’s main front for European business expansion.
The company said its approach will include greater use of planning and consulting capabilities, stronger local integration and increased two-way talent exchanges between China and Spain.
Energy China also intends to focus on industrial carbon reduction, green hydrogen and e-fuels, as well as new power systems. The strategy includes strengthening project planning and technology capabilities while improving coordination between its front-end development activities and wider industrial supply chain.
The emphasis on Spain reflects a broader effort by Energy China to develop European business through local partnerships, project development and engineering execution rather than focusing solely on individual projects.
Green Hydrogen Trade and Industrial Decarbonisation Context
The discussions come as Spain develops its position in Europe’s renewable hydrogen economy and as industrial companies explore hydrogen, renewable fuels and electrification as tools for reducing emissions.
For Energy China, the Spanish strategy brings together several areas of its international business: renewable and low-carbon energy development, engineering and construction, biomass generation, green fuels and energy-system integration.
