IndianOil-Adani Gas Pvt. Ltd. (IOAGPL) has signed its first-ever tripartite agreement in Kerala with GAIL (India) Limited (GAIL) and Blue Planet Palakkad Waste Solutions Pvt. Ltd. (BPWSPL) for the offtake of Compressed Biogas (CBG).
The agreement was signed on September 11, 2026, under the Government of India’s CBG-CGD Synchronization Scheme, marking a significant step towards integrating municipal waste-based CBG with Kerala’s existing gas infrastructure.
The agreement brings together IOAGPL, GAIL and BPWSPL to facilitate the offtake of CBG produced from municipal solid waste.
CBG to be integrated with Kerala’s gas pipeline network
A key highlight of the agreement is the integration of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)-based CBG with the existing steel pipeline network in Kerala.
The initiative will enable direct injection of CBG into the steel pipeline network, allowing renewable gas produced from municipal waste to be integrated with existing gas infrastructure.
The development represents an important step in connecting waste management with clean-energy production and could support the wider adoption of sustainable gaseous fuels in Kerala.
Senior officials attend agreement signing
The agreement was executed in the presence of senior officials from the participating organizations.
Those present included Ashish Kesarwani, GM – Marketing, Karnataka & Kerala, GAIL; S Hari Kumar, GM (O&M-PL) & OIC, Kochi, GAIL; Hari Pillai, Project Director, BPWSPL; Sandeep Akkara, District I/c, Palakkad, IOAGPL; and Arun V, District I/c, Thrissur, IOAGPL, along with other senior officials from GAIL.
The participation of representatives from the gas distribution and waste-management sectors underlines the collaborative nature of the initiative.
Converting municipal waste into clean energy
The project highlights the potential of municipal solid waste to serve as a feedstock for Compressed Biogas production.
CBG can provide a pathway for converting organic waste into a usable gaseous fuel while supporting more efficient resource utilization. Integrating such renewable gas with existing pipeline infrastructure can further strengthen the connection between waste management and the energy sector.
The initiative also supports the broader concept of a circular economy, where waste materials are converted into useful resources instead of being treated solely as waste.
Supporting India’s CBG ecosystem
The Government of India has been promoting Compressed Biogas as part of its broader efforts to diversify the country’s energy mix and encourage alternative fuels.
The CBG-CGD Synchronization Scheme is intended to facilitate the integration of CBG with City Gas Distribution networks, helping connect CBG producers with existing gas infrastructure.
The Kerala agreement provides a practical example of how municipal waste-based CBG can be integrated into an established gas pipeline network.
IOAGPL, GAIL and BPWSPL eye long-term association
IOAGPL said it looks forward to a long-term association with GAIL and BPWSPL as the organizations work together towards energy transition and a sustainable future.
The collaboration could also serve as a model for future projects involving municipal waste management, CBG production and gas distribution infrastructure.
The agreement marks an important development for Kerala’s clean-energy ecosystem by bringing municipal waste-based CBG closer to direct integration with the state’s existing gas network.
