Next Hydrogen targets commercialisation as new CEO sets growth strategy

Moyer took over the leadership role in early September, bringing experience spanning manufacturing, supply-chain management, consulting and renewable energy. Her immediate focus is to turn Next Hydrogen’s electrolyzer technology into a scalable commercial business while identifying customers and applications where the company’s systems can be deployed effectively.

Commercial scale-up becomes priority

Next Hydrogen develops electrolyzers that use electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The resulting hydrogen can be used in industrial and transportation applications as a lower-carbon alternative to fossil fuels, as well as in nuclear energy applications.

Moyer said commercialisation is “definitely” her priority. Her plans include scaling the business, strengthening its customer focus and developing a commercial operation capable of repeatedly delivering products that meet customer requirements.

A key part of that strategy will be standardising the company’s electrolyzer technology while ensuring it can be adapted to specific customer requirements.

Moyer said she is confident in the reliability and efficiency of Next Hydrogen’s product, but added that identifying the right customer fit will be a major focus.

Her previous experience includes plant-floor management, process improvement and supply-chain optimisation at PepsiCo Foods Canada, followed by more than five years at management consultancy Bain & Company. She later joined Heliolytics, a Toronto-based company providing aerial inspection and analytics for photovoltaic systems.

Heliolytics was acquired by US-based Zeitview in 2023, after which Moyer served as Zeitview’s senior vice-president of strategy and operations.

She said those roles gave her experience in hardware and software development, scaling products and bringing new offerings into real-world markets.

British Columbia project could demonstrate scale

Next Hydrogen is using a planned project in British Columbia as an opportunity to demonstrate its approach to larger-scale hydrogen production and fuelling.

In August, the company announced that it had completed a basic design engineering package for a planned 10 MW hydrogen fuelling station in the province.

Moyer described the proposed project as an opportunity to demonstrate a reliable, scalable and modular solution. If completed, it would become Next Hydrogen’s largest project, according to the source material.

British Columbia is also identified as an early adopter of hydrogen fuel for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, providing a potential market for the company’s electrolyzer technology.

The project represents an important step in Next Hydrogen’s attempt to move from technology development towards repeatable commercial deployment. However, the source does not provide a construction or commissioning date for the proposed fuelling station.

Existing electrolyzer supports clean hydrogen fuelling

Next Hydrogen already has an operating reference project in Ontario.

In 2025, the company began operating an electrolyzer at a distribution centre for clean hydrogen fuelling. The system was designed to produce up to 650 kg of hydrogen per day to support fuel-cell forklifts.

The Ontario installation provides Next Hydrogen with an operating application for its technology, while the proposed British Columbia project would represent a substantially larger deployment if completed.

The contrast between the two projects also reflects Moyer’s stated focus on scaling technology and making its deployment more repeatable.

Company expands into nuclear fusion applications

Hydrogen is not the only emerging market being pursued by Next Hydrogen.

The company has also expanded its work in the nuclear fusion sector through an agreement with Fusion Fuel Cycles Inc. to demonstrate purpose-built electrolyzers for fusion applications.

Fusion Fuel Cycles has also awarded two contracts to Next Hydrogen to showcase its electrolyzer technology for a specialised nuclear fusion application.

Moyer said Next Hydrogen’s electrolyzer design is well suited to fusion energy and can help reduce contamination risks.

“We see fusion as an important, long-term market entering a critical phase,” she said.

The fusion opportunity is being positioned as a longer-term market alongside the company’s more immediate focus on commercialising electrolyzer systems for hydrogen applications.

Hydrogen market faces cost and infrastructure challenges

Moyer remains optimistic about the broader hydrogen market, pointing to energy independence and energy security as factors supporting interest in hydrogen technologies.

Electrolyzers require electricity and water to produce hydrogen, potentially allowing countries with suitable resources and infrastructure to diversify hydrogen production away from imported fossil fuels.

However, the sector continues to face commercial constraints.

The International Energy Agency’s 2026 review of the hydrogen industry noted that electrolysis could help diversify hydrogen production away from coal and gas, while also highlighting that low-emissions hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels remain relatively limited in production and distribution.

The agency also expects low-carbon hydrogen production to remain more expensive than fossil-fuel-based hydrogen in most regions.

These conditions make cost, scalability and customer fit important considerations for electrolyzer developers seeking to move from demonstration projects into wider commercial deployment.

Bioenergy Business Analysis

Next Hydrogen’s strategy highlights a central challenge facing electrolyzer manufacturers: developing technology is only the first step, while achieving repeatable commercial deployment requires customers, standardised products and scalable operations.

The immediate commercial question is whether Next Hydrogen can convert these technology and demonstration opportunities into a broader pipeline of repeatable customer deployments. Moyer’s background in operations, consulting and renewable-energy businesses is closely aligned with that challenge.

With Moyer now leading the company, Next Hydrogen is entering a phase focused less on proving the basic concept of electrolysis and more on translating its technology into commercial opportunities.
