Lhyfe, a leading producer of green and renewable hydrogen for industrial and mobility sectors, has joined forces with Atmen, an integrated compliance automation platform, to establish a new benchmark for carbon footprint traceability and transparency in the hydrogen and Power-to-X (PtX) industries.
Lhyfe Moves Toward RFNBO Certification
Since its inception, Lhyfe has prioritized the highest ecological standards in its hydrogen production. The company eagerly anticipated the approval of the European Commission’s Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) certification schemes for renewable hydrogen, which were finalized in December 2024. With these guidelines in place, Lhyfe has begun the process of securing RFNBO certification for its hydrogen production operations.
The RFNBO certification ensures that hydrogen is produced sustainably through water electrolysis powered by 100% renewable electricity. It also includes a detailed carbon footprint assessment of the production process, meeting stringent European Union standards. This certification reinforces the trust of partners, clients, and investors in Lhyfe’s commitment to environmental excellence.
Introducing the Hydrogen Digital Passport for Full Transparency
As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance transparency and surpass existing regulations, Lhyfe has partnered with Atmen to implement a groundbreaking traceability system. This collaboration provides unprecedented precision and granularity in monitoring the carbon footprint of Lhyfe’s green hydrogen.
Through the integration of a Digital Product Passport, each delivery of hydrogen will come with detailed information regarding its carbon footprint, including:
- Energy sourcing: The origin, timing, and method of electricity used for production.
- Embedded emissions: A breakdown of the carbon intensity at each stage of production.
- Supply chain contribution: The environmental impact at each stage of processing and logistics.
This advanced traceability system will first be implemented at Lhyfe’s Bouin facility in Vendée, France, and will expand to other sites as the company works toward securing RFNBO certification across its production network. Once certified, the Digital Product Passports will carry the “RFNBO-compliant” label.
Simplifying Regulatory Compliance with Automation
The partnership between Lhyfe and Atmen also streamlines compliance with rigorous sustainability standards, such as RFNBO. Atmen’s automation platform helps ensure:
- Accurate reporting: High-precision carbon intensity calculations offer clear, transparent data.
- Efficient compliance automation: The automatic generation of Digital Product Passports reduces human intervention, boosting operational efficiency.
- Detailed client alignment: The solution provides clients with the tools to meet their emissions and decarbonization goals with unprecedented accuracy.
Statements from Leadership
Flore de Durfort, CEO of Atmen, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “Atmen is excited to collaborate with Lhyfe, one of Europe’s most innovative and fastest-growing hydrogen producers. Together, we are setting a new standard in traceability, enabling the hydrogen sector to meet the highest sustainability requirements with precision and transparency.”
Antoine Hamon, COO of Lhyfe, added, “Our partnership with Atmen is a pivotal step in fulfilling our commitment to transparency in both sustainability and traceability. The introduction of Digital Product Passports will enhance confidence in the sustainability of our hydrogen. We encourage the industry to adopt this practice, fostering trust and growth in the sector.”
Through this collaboration, Lhyfe and Atmen are making significant strides in advancing the hydrogen sector’s transparency and sustainability, setting a new standard for the industry’s future.
