Kingdom Konsult partners with Saudi Biofuel Company to develop Qatar B100 market

Qatar-based Kingdom Konsult has entered an exclusive partnership with The Biofuel Company of Saudi Arabia to develop a market for B100 biodiesel in Qatar, with the two companies planning to assess pilot projects before considering wider commercial deployment.

Qatar-based Kingdom Konsult has entered an exclusive partnership with The Biofuel Company of Saudi Arabia to develop a market for B100 biodiesel in Qatar, with the two companies planning to assess pilot projects before considering wider commercial deployment.

Under the agreement, Kingdom Konsult will take responsibility for market development in Qatar, including stakeholder engagement and identifying potential commercial opportunities. The Saudi partner will supply the biodiesel and provide technical expertise, product documentation, certifications and support for prospective projects.

The partnership was announced during the AIM Congress in Dubai in September. However, the companies have not yet disclosed a first customer, proposed supply volume or delivery schedule.

Partnership targets diesel-dependent sectors

The partners intend to explore opportunities across both Qatar’s public and private sectors. Potential applications identified under the agreement include transport and logistics, industrial operations, infrastructure and construction, as well as hospitality, education, sports facilities and major events.

The proposed approach is to begin with pilot projects and demonstrations that can establish the operational and commercial case for using B100 in Qatar before moving towards larger-scale applications.

B100 refers to biodiesel used in its neat form rather than blended with conventional fossil diesel. The Biofuel Company of Saudi Arabia produces its biodiesel from collected used cooking oil at its facility in Jubail and says the fuel complies with the EN 14214 biodiesel standard.

The arrangement therefore creates a potential cross-border supply model in which waste-derived biodiesel produced in Saudi Arabia could be introduced into diesel-dependent applications in Qatar, subject to customer agreements, technical requirements and the outcome of pilot deployments.

Saudi biodiesel production to support Qatar market development

Kingdom Konsult will lead engagement with potential users and other stakeholders in Qatar, while The Biofuel Company will provide the technical and product support required for potential deployments.

Katina Aghayan, Chair and Founder of Kingdom Konsult, said the partnership would link Saudi biofuel production and technical capabilities with prospective customers in Qatar. She also highlighted regional fuel supply as relevant to both energy resilience and emissions reduction.

Abdullah Al Otaibi, CEO of The Biofuel Company of Saudi Arabia, said the agreement would combine the company’s biofuel production and technical capabilities with Kingdom Konsult’s market knowledge and stakeholder engagement in Qatar.

Gary Hubbard, SVP Commercial and Operations at The Biofuel Company, said the partners would focus on demonstrating the commercial and operational case for B100 in the Qatari market.

Commercial deployment remains subject to pilots

The agreement does not yet establish a confirmed commercial-scale B100 supply programme in Qatar. The companies have said that pilot projects and demonstrations will be explored first, with subsequent expansion dependent on the results and agreements reached with customers.

The proposed applications could give B100 a potential role in sectors where diesel remains an important fuel for vehicles, equipment and other operations. At the same time, market development would require users to assess factors including fuel specifications, equipment compatibility, supply logistics, certification requirements and operating economics.

The companies said the proposed deployments are aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the country’s Third National Development Strategy, particularly in relation to emissions reduction and energy diversification.

Bioenergy Business Analysis

The partnership is significant primarily as a market-development agreement rather than a confirmed large-scale biodiesel supply contract. No initial customer, volume or delivery date has been announced, meaning the immediate test will be whether Kingdom Konsult and The Biofuel Company can convert prospective applications into technically and commercially viable pilot projects.

Using Saudi-produced B100 made from used cooking oil could also provide a regional pathway for waste-derived biodiesel, but the eventual scale of the opportunity will depend on feedstock availability, production capacity, cross-border logistics, Qatar’s fuel requirements and the economics faced by end users.

The focus on multiple diesel-dependent sectors gives the partnership a broad potential customer base. However, actual adoption will depend on the performance and economics demonstrated through the pilots. If those deployments establish a workable business case, the agreement could provide a foundation for broader use of neat biodiesel in Qatar’s transport, industrial and infrastructure sectors.
